7th Grade World Food Project In Computer class, the seventh grade has completed a project that included selecting a country. Each student researched food and recipes from that country and presented this to the class . Then they developed a menu based on the research, and designed a restaurant. Using Microsoft Word, students drew a layout of the restaurant. Using Microsoft Excel they developed an expense budget on what it would cost to operate the restaurant for 1 week, and how much income was required to make a small profit. The culmination of this unit was a visit for lunch at Ramsi's Café on the World. Everyone enjoyed a variety of foods! Check out the bulletin board in the middle school hallway :-)
The 5th grade classes will have a field trip to Starlight Frozen Custard, after lunch on Wednesday or Thursday, 9/23 or 9/24 (depending on the weather). the purpose of this field trip is to tie in to the students' math curriculum, specifically to test calculations to estimate how long it would take to walk a given distance. Permission slips went home today with students and can also be found on Mrs. Korte's faculaty web page.
Math Club Part One Mrs. Korte is starting a middle school math club, which will meet every Thursday from 3:00 - 3:30. During these Thursday sessions, the focus will be to improve the speed and accuracy of basic computations, from addition and subtraction facts up to and including computations with decimals and fractions. Later in the year, the club will begin meeting on Fridays as well, and those meetings will focus on problem solving, logic, and playing games. The first session will start September 24th and go nine weeks, until November 19th. The cost will be $15 to cover snacks and prizes. The sign-up sheet will be available outside Mrs. Korte's room beginning Monday, September 21st. Our Art teacher, Sharon Weiss, will have an art opening entitled, Interstitial, on Friday, October 2, 6-9 PM ("First Friday Trolley Hop") at Zephyr Gallery.
2009-2010 Walden Directory/Handbook is being sent home today with students.
2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognize middle and high school students for their volunteer service in their communities. If you would like to apply for this community service award (for service participated in outside of school), please fill out an application on line, and submit it to Mrs. Elder: http://spirit.prudential.com. For more information, see the middle school bulletin board.
Check out radio station 93.9 FM every Monday to Friday @ 7:25 AM. Walden students will be featured along with other area schools reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. If you miss it this week, don't worry, it will be repeated over the course of time.
Walden School's International Theme - Check out Mr. Kimbrough's weekly Geoquiz question. Mr. Kimbrough is one of our high school social studies teachers, and at each Monday morning assembly this year, he will present a geography question, which students can research and email their answer by 1:00 PM on Friday. All students who answer correctly will be eligible to have their name placed in a random drawing to receive a special t-shirt commemorating this year's international theme. Here's the link to check out this week's question:
