Congratulations to the following students for qualifying for the Duke University Talent Identification Program:  Brian Brennan, CJ Burton, Elliot Vitaz, Evan Randall, Harris Boyer, Jarrett Bond, Jordan O'Reilly, Sarah Self, Tesnim Arar, and Will Mandrola.  In order to qualify for this honor, these students had to score in the 95th percentile on at least one eligible subtest of a national standardized test.

Based on recommendations from the CDC, students have been advised to bring water bottles from home, which they can refill at school, to help minimize student exposure to flu germs via the water fountain.

Check out radio station 93.9 FM every Monday to Friday @ 7:25 AM.  Walden students will be featured along with other area schools reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.  If you miss it this week, don't worry, it will be repeated over the course of time.

Walden School's International Theme - Check out Mr. Kimbrough's weekly Geoquiz question.  Mr. Kimbrough is one of our high school social studies teachers, and at each Monday morning assembly this year, he will present a geography question, which students can research and email their answer by 1:00 PM on Friday.  All students who answer correctly will be eligible to have their name placed in a random drawing to receive a special t-shirt commemorating this year's international theme.  Here's the link to check out this week's question:

News from the Walden Gym

Welcome back!  We are off to a great start this year!   We have ordered uniforms for everyone who needed new ones, and they should be here in a week or so!  Fifth grade will begin changing into PE clothes after the first trimester (we have not ordered theirs yet).  Please help your student(s) remember to bring their PE clothes and tennis shoes for class.  Points will be deducted from their participation grade when they do not dress out.  Also, I have posted a link on my web page for a monthly activity calendar.  It has great ideas for physical activity for after school and on the weekends.  Fun for the whole FAMILY!
PE schedule:
5th grade:  Tuesday, Thursday 10:55-11:35, and Friday (5Kunz 10:10-10:40 and 5Korte 10:40-11:15)
6S:  Tuesday and Thursday 10:00-10:45
6W:  Monday and Wednesday 10:00-10:45
7th grade: Tuesday and Thursday 12:30-1:18
8th grade: Tuesday and Thursday 9:00-9:45

Information about the Jr. Beta Club

The National Beta Club was formed in Spartanburg, SC, in 1934.  The club's goal was to be an organization that would recognize academic achievement among high school students and promote leadership, character, and community service.  In 1961, the Club created a junior division, which was called The National Junior Beta Club.  Today there are about 3,000 Beta Clubs and nearly 5,000 Jr. Beta Clubs nationally.  Walden's Jr. Beta Club was chartered in January 1994.

According to The National Beta Club's constitution, "Membership is a privilege and not a right."  Individual schools are required to select which grades will participate and to set their own academic and character standards for membership.

In order for a student to be nominated to Walden's Jr. Beta Club, he or she must be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade and have a 94% average.  This average is based on the first two trimesters' grades, with double weight given to the core academic courses (Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, & Science).  New members are inducted each spring.

Once a student is nominated, all of the Middle School teachers (including special area teachers) are asked to help determine whether or not a student should be invited to join.  This process is done confidentially (teachers do not know their colleagues' input) and is based on the following criteria:

1.      The student consistently comes to class prepared and on time and puts forth his/her best effort.
2.      The student consistently treats peers, adults, and school property with respect.  (This includes sportsmanship on school teams.)
3.      The student consistently conducts himself appropriately during free time (halls, break, & recess).

In order to remain a Club member, students must maintain the high standards, which got them into the Club.

Students in Walden's Jr. Beta Club will meet regularly, select officers, perform a minimum of 10 service hours, maintain their GPA, and behave appropriately (according to the above criteria and the Walden handbook), with a goal of being a leader and role model in their middle school community.  The club will plan at least one fundraising activity (usually a bake-sale), and attends the state-level convention every other year.

We encourage all students to aspire to become Jr. Beta Club members.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email us.
