We are very proud of 8th grader Brock Martin, who volunteerd many hours this summer at Norton Suburban Hospital.  Brock was a wayfinder, greeting and guiding guests throughout the hospital.  Brock will continue to volunteer four hours per week during the school year because he says:  it's "fun" and "I like helping people."
            Welcome Back
The Middle School faculty welcomes back our students and families.  Our opening week went very smoothly.  In addition to our incoming fifth grade, we are excited to have many students new to Walden this year.  This newsletter will be published every other Monday during the school year, and posted on the school web page (follow the faculty web page links to Mrs. Elder's page).  If you have any news to share about your child's achievements outside of school, please email Mrs. Elder, so that she can share it with the Walden community.  Please note - middle school students will no longer bring home Tuesday Envelopes, since most school communication is handled on-line. Today please look for your WPA fundraising materials, which students will be bringing home (see more information below).

Young citizens Organization
The mission of Walden Middle School's Young Citizens Organization (YCO) is to prepare 6th-8th grade students to be involved, informed, and respectable citizens and leaders by fostering pertinent analytical, organizational, and communication skills and through knowledge of governmental and international institutions.  We capitalize on various opportunities through our community to practice these skills, including at Kentucky's mock state legislature and mock United Nations conferences.  Students may attend an informational about YCO this Wednesday, 26 August, to learn more details and to determine their interest.  More information will available for students to bring home with them; this information also will be posted on the YCO page on Mrs. Farmer's school website Wednesday afternoon.  Our first regular meeting will be on Wednesday, 2 September during lunch.

Tardies to School
Thank you to all of the students who have started off this school year consistently on time!  Students need to be dropped off no later than 7:50 AM,  so that they can be ready to start first period on time (8:00 AM sharp).  Your child's success in school is enhanced by consistent on-time attendance to school.  Walden Middle School's policy is that any student who is tardy to school eight times in a trimester will receive a detention.

Physical Education
Just a reminder that athletic shoes are required for PE classes and for participation during recess when inclement weather requires recess to be held in the gym.  If students own more than one pair of sneakers, please consider keeping a spare set in their lockers, so that shoes worn outside do not track in dirt onto the newly refinished gym floor.
5th grade has PE on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
6W has PE on Monday and Wednesdays.
6S has PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
7th grade has PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
8th grade has PE on Monday and Wednesdays.

Carpool Reminder
Middle School carpool lasts from 3:00 to 3:15 PM.  Please be on time to pick up your child(ren).  If you come into the building to pick up your child and need to take care of other business (e.g., main office, business office, talk to a teacher, WPA, auction committee, etc.), please make sure your child is by your side, or waiting for you in the TAH (picked up by 3:15), so that students are not unsupervised after dismissal.  This is a safety concern.

Cell Phone & digital devices policy reminder
Cell phones, ipods, and digital cameras cannot be used or seen during the school day.  Students may have these items turned off and in their lockers - unseen, unheard, and unused - and transport them to and from school discretely.  If a student needs to make a call during the school day (any time before 4 PM), he or she is free to use any school office phone with teacher or staff permission.  To protect student privacy, we ask that students refrain from taking pictures of other students.  After 4 PM, students are permitted to use their cell phones (e.g., to call a parent after sports practice, etc.).   If a student violates this policy, his/her cell phone will be confiscated and returned at the end of the next school day.  A second offense will be considered a Major Rules Violation.

 FLAGS
In support of our theme this year, we are trying to festoon the school with flags from around the world.  If you would like to sponsor a flag please see Mrs. Frey in the office and let her know  the country you would like to sponsor.  Sponsorships are $50.  The flags will be ordered from a local flag company and they will be displayed around the school.  Sponsors will have their names posted in the Tucker Assembly Hall along with the country they have selected.  Selection will be on a first come first served basis.

Greener Pastures . . .  and Innisbrook Fundraising--2 Big Changes from the WPA
With an effort to use and consume less, we will be sending home one Innisbrook Catalog per family.  It will be sent home with your youngest child.  Further promoting this effort, Innisbrook has discontinued the use of the "3-part form."  After gathering orders, parents simply enter their orders on line, print the voucher and send the voucher to school with a check attached.  Full instructions for this are included in the packet.  If you have questions, concerns or problems with these changes, please contact me.  If having only one catalog to share between 2-3 children presents a fairness problem in your household, contact me or Mrs. Frey.  We will happily send home as many catalogs as you need.

More Green . . . For Our School & For You-The Coupon Books!
Our CashBook Savings (Coupon Book) Fundraiser will take place at the same time as Innisbrook!  Just think-all WPA fundraising efforts completed within the first 3 weeks of school!  As with last year, each family will receive 2 Coupon Books in an envelope, sent home with your youngest child at Walden.  Please send payment back to school in the envelope for the books or return any unwanted or unsold books by September 8.  The envelope can also be used to order more books.  This package will go home on the same day as the Innisbrook package.  Please call me if you have any questions.  Lisa Tuell  425-6644 or ltuell@bellsouth.net
Both fundraising campaigns run from Monday, August 24 to Tuesday, September 8.  Thank you for your support of the projects the Walden Parent Association (WPA) makes to Walden.
Walden School Birthday Book Club
Dear Parents,   You can celebrate your child's birthday in a special way and help our library collection continue to grow by joining the Walden School Birthday Book Club. Participation in the program involves a $15 donation per book (one per child). Most children's books actually cost between $15 and $20. The Walden School Library will subsidize any additional cost.  For this donation your child may select a new book from the Birthday Bookshelf located in the library office. The inside front cover of the book will have his or her name and birth date inscribed on a bookplate. The birthday child also has the honor of being the first to check out the new book.. Children have a special appreciation for the books they "select" to add to our library shelves.  They enjoy sharing them with their classmates and teacher. These books will remain in the library throughout all their years at Walden School. This is a wonderful way to commemorate a very special occasion and help our library maintain a high-quality collection.  If you are interested in joining, please cut and paste the form below and turn it in with your
$15 (per child) donation to their homeroom teacher by August 28. Your generosity will benefit all of our students. We thank you for your participation and
support of our school library!
Sincerely, Donna Sewell
