| Funding for Public Safety, Libraries, Children, and the Elderly |
Transparency in government is important to me. Elected officials should take the extra step to provide information to
the public rather than simply make it available for anyone with the time and
energy to uncover it. As your representative, I feel it is my duty
to insure your tax dollars are targeted in the most effective way
possible. One area that is often unknown to the general public is the distribution of the General Improvement Fund or GIF.
For the allocations in Pulaski County, I placed a priority on
distribution of funds for public safety.
As you can see, more than 60% of the funds were dedicated to the city,
county, and local fire departments for use in the enhancement of public safety. These distributions for public safety will
help build two more fire stations for Little Rock, repair and replace police
cars, and help open more jail beds in the Pulaski County detention center. The remaining funds were divided among
programs for the elderly, the protection of children, library systems, and
higher education.
So what is the General Improvement Fund (GIF)? As you may have read, at the end of the General session there was a "surplus" of over $300 million remaining after
the budget was funded. In Arkansas a
"balanced" state budget means that the balance must be at zero. So these remaining funds are distributed across the state as
General Improvement Funds (GIF). This
session, the funds were divided between the House and Senate and then further divided
among Legislators for use in their respective districts.
Below is a list of projects that are being funded from the GIF dollars allocated to District 32.
