Fun Fact: LOUIE'S SEARCH

Ezra sometimes used models when he sketched, to give his characters just the right movement or expression. He used himself as a model for Barney, but for a real self-

portrait, look for the truck driver on the last page.

Fun Fact: THE TRIP

Did you know that THE TRIP is also a musical play? It's called "Captain Louie," and the music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz, the composer of "Wicked"! It was first produced in 2004 and is still performed today.

REGARDS TO THE MAN IN THE MOON

The other kids call his dad "the junk man," but Louie knows better. With a little help and a lot of imagination, Louie builds a spaceship--and blasts off into an amazing adventure.

Fun Fact: REGARDS TO MAN IN THE MOON

Louie's spaceship, Imagination l, may be fueled by fantasy, but his journey through the universe is based in fact. To make his illustrations of outer space look as realistic as possible, Ezra consulted a renowned scientist, his best friend Martin Pope.

Dear Friends,

Since last January, our digital wizard Diana Vozza has been shooting videos that display Ezra's continuing influence-on kids, on parents and on educators. She's gone into classrooms, libraries and homes to record the joy and the thoughtfulness Keats stories evoke. None of the videos are scripted, and all the participants behave as naturally as they appear to.

We began this series as part of the run-up to the 50th anniversary, in 2012, of The Snowy Day, Ezra's first and, I think, most influential book. We also hoped that people might be exposed to Keats books they hadn't read. After all, Ezra wrote and illustrated two dozen books over 20 years, some classic and others ready to be rediscovered. For our film festival we chose 12 that are as timely for this new generation as for previous ones.

That's what this anniversary celebration is all about: the books. The artwork, the characters and their experiences, the inspiration to other writers, the pleasure they give both to young readers and, to use Ezra's phrase, to "ex-kids."

Sincerely,

Deborah Pope
