Fun Fact: LOUIE

Ezra often used details from his childhood in his books. Gussie is not just the name of Louie's beloved puppet. Ezra's mother, Augusta, was often called Gussie.

Maggie and the Pirate discussion

Fun Fact: MAGGIE AND THE PIRATE

This book was originally going to be called Annie and the Pirate until a friend of

Ezra's suggested that the title character be named Maggie. Ezra often took suggestions for names from his friends.

THE TRIP  the trip cover

When Louie's family moves to a new neighborhood, Louie misses his old friends. Sad and lonely, he makes a diorama in a shoebox of a cityscape, which in his imagination becomes the scene of a great adventure.

Fun Fact: THE TRIP

Did you know that The Trip is also a musical play? It's called "Captain Louie," and the music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz, the composer of "Wicked"! It was first produced in 2004 and is still performed today.

Dear Friends,

Welcome back from summer vacation! The beginning of a new school year, with new notebooks and colored pencils, is always exciting and hopeful.

Educators, it's time to start thinking of ideas for great Minigrant projects. The application and all the information you'll need to submit are up on our website. Just click on the Minigrant announcement at the bottom of this page to watch a video tutorial that will walk you through the application guidelines.

This month, our Keats Film Festival video, at left, comes with fun facts about puppetry and great craft ideas for home or school. Your kids will love puppets as much as Louie does.

We are thrilled to announce the opening of an important museum exhibition that pays tribute to Ezra (see below). Geared to art-loving adults and book-loving kids, this show is a great destination for a class trip or a weekend family day. Take your kids before it closes on January 29, 2012!

Sincerely,

Deborah Pope
