PET SHOW!

PET SHOW bryson buster play

Fun Fact: PET SHOW!

The letters in the title on the original cover for PET SHOW! were drawn by kids who wrote to Ezra about his books. The publisher changed the letters on the cover, but if you look at the first page of the story you'll still see the PET SHOW! as drawn by kids in the early 1970s.

Fun Fact: MAGGIE AND THE PIRATE

This book was originally going to be called ANNIE AND THE PIRATE until a friend of Ezra's suggested that the title character be

named Maggie. Ezra often took suggestions for names from

his friends.

Fun Fact: HI CAT!

Here Ezra shows how important animals were to him. As a boy he desperately wanted a pet, but his family could not afford one. The grown-up Ezra fulfilled his dream: he had a dog named Jake and a cat named Samantha.

Dear Friends,

MAGGIE AND THE PIRATE takes place in a land of constant summer. The story was inspired by a trip Ezra took to southern California but the location could as easily be in Florida or Louisiana. It is fitting that we celebrate this book during our summer vacations.
It is hard to believe that there are only six more months until 2012 and the 50th anniversary of THE SNOWY DAY. Now, while it is very hot, is the best time to day dream about how wonderful it would be to play in the snow. How will you be celebrating THE SNOWY DAY? Here's an idea....
Celebrate with us on the very first SNOWY DAY Day, in early January 2012, when schools and libraries all over the country will read and enjoy THE SNOWY DAY by Ezra Jack Keats. Plan a party in your classroom, library, day care center or home, and send us a short video of the celebration for our website!

Sincerely,

Deborah Pope

Executive Director

Ezra Jack Keats Foundation

P.S.: Meanwhile, if your children talk to you about the Keats books you read together, we'd love to have their comments on video. What do kids really think about these books? We want to know!
