Ezra Jack Keats DREAMS

FUN FACTS

SNOWY DAY: Originally, half of the illustrations for THE SNOWY DAY were in color and half in black and white.  Ezra's publisher insisted that they all be in color!  Can you imagine Peter's snowsuit in black or gray, instead of red?  We are grateful that the book was produced just the way it was, in glorious color.

DREAMS: Ezra is famous for constructing his illustrations with collage.  Did you know that he made the paper with swirls used in all the skys and many of the windows in DREAMS by floating colored ink on water and then pressing paper gently on top? Here is a look on how it's done, it's called marbling.
A LETTER TO AMY:

Look at the back cover of A LETTER TO AMY.  Do you see the names of people scribbled like graffiti on the wall in the picture?  Very few people know this...but those are the names of Ezra's friends and co-workers!

Dear Friends,

Will spring ever come to the Northeast United States?  We are no longer sure and that is why celebrating A LETTER TO AMY in this newsletter is so appropriate. The stormy weather greeting Peter as he goes to mail his invitation to Amy is just what we have been experiencing for almost all of March and now April!

But we are looking forward to the weather changing and being able to see videos of our fans reading PETER'S CHAIR.  We are thrilled with the videos we have been able to share thus far and would love to include you and your kids enjoying Ezra's books.  Don't be shy!

Please, tell your friends about us.  Don't keep these cute videos all to yourself.

Sincerely,

Deborah Pope

PETER'S CHAIR

Peter's Chair cover

First they painted Peter's old cradle pink for the new baby; then his crib.  Then they wanted to paint Peter's chair!  "Let's run away, Willie." he said to his

dog.  And they did, and Peter found he was growing up in more ways than one.

Fun Fact:  Willie, Peter's dog, has the same name as Ezra's older brother, William.  Everyone loves Willie and he appears in quite a few of Ezra's books.  Willie was very important to Ezra in his books and this reflected how important William was to him in real life.
