Celebrate Brooklyn's Annual Ezra Jack Keats Family Concert

CELEBRATE BROOKLYN! @ Prospect Park Bandshell
August 8, 2010
4:00 PM

Gates open at 3:00pm

with Brady Rymer / Elizabeth Mitchell

The 32nd Celebrate Brooklyn! season closes with a day of family friendly American roots and folk music to honor the legacy of the progressive children's book author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats. Brady Rymer's down home, foot stomping Little Band That Could "might just be the best-sounding band in children's music." (NPR's All Things Considered) Elizabeth Mitchell's sweet, perfect renditions of Woody Guthrie classics and other folk gems made her the first modern children's artist to be signed to the venerable American Folkways label; her gleeful covers of the Velvet Underground and Bob Marley speak to the child in all of us. Dominic Colón, who plays Manny Spamboni on the hit PBS kids show The Electric Company, will share a reading.

TEACH ANYONE TO READ: THE NO-NONSENSE GUIDE

bookart   This new edition of Dr. Lillie Pope's classic manual, Guidelines to Teaching Reading, has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and proven that its methods are successful when used by teachers, teacher assistants, coaches, tutors and lay people working with children adults, teenagers and ESL students.
Dr. Pope's approach, based on decades of experience and solid theory, includes instructions and sample materials, presented in easily understood and supportive language. Free from jargon or rigid ideology, Dr. Pope's book gives the instructor the tools to approach each individual with a variety of methods, thus allowing the learning program to be molded to the needs of the particular student.  This work, having pioneered the most effective ways of breaking through to children and adults who have never had success with, or an opportunity to learn to read, is a classic because its methods remain effective and manageable in the confusing climate of today's literacy wars.

EJK FOUNDATION PUBLISHES ITS FIRST BOOK! TEACH ANYONE TO READ:THE NO-NONSENSE GUIDE

We are proud to say that this is the first book published by the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation.  It was chosen as our pilot publication because it brings a uniquely effective voice back to the arena of teaching reading, and it advances the cause of universal literacy, a primary part of the foundation's mission.
