Throw it Away, There is No Away.

We filmed Earth Day celebrations on Saturday and Lauren, MatieB and I decided we need to help create a mind shift.  Studies show we each create more than 4 pounds of trash a day.  There is a common phrase that we use regularly, "put it in the recycle bin," yet the one that is ingrained in my mind is the double edge sword from my youth, "just throw it away."  Well guess what...there is no away!  Just think about that right now, how many times do you say, "just throw it away?" Every time you think this, create a mind-shift because this away does not exist.  Away really means relocate it to another place on the planet.  Some groups would like to send our waste material into outer space and to "take it away" from our Earth and our Ocean, but that is not the answer to the nearly 7 billion people on our planet.  Trash sites of the past are used by archeologists and anthropologists because they study waste created by past civilizations to learn about past cultures, yet if people were studying us 500 years from now some of the only things left would be diapers and plastic bottles!  How do you want to be remembered?

During the past six weeks I have tried to live without plastic and it has literally been impossible, but it has created this awareness of just how much waste I create everyday.  How have I been able to reduce, reuse and recycle?  Click here to learn three easy ways to put the three R's into practice.  And please, create an Earth Day Resolution to apply everyday.  We need to celebrate Mother Ocean and Earth everyday!

They do not swim like their cousins, they move around like armored tanks crawling along the bottom. Find Out More!

camera coachWhen you are behind the camera you always need to be aware of your surroundings and how you can place the viewers into your scenes. Use signs to set your scene and show your viewer where they are at. Whenever we go to a new location we will always film signs, but they may not always make the cut. Want to know more? Read More

When we go to the beach we can see the impact we have on our ocean.  Trash that is not thrown away properly harms sea life.  Holly Bamford is the director of the Marine Debris Program at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and her job is to help fix this problem by creating and managing programs that reduce the affect of marine debris. There is a huge buildup of trash in parts of our ocean, such as the North Pacific Gyre.

What is a gyre?  Why does it collect trash?
