Oh, Deer!
Avoiding a Collision
Did you know that October, November and December are the most dangerous months for vehicle collisions with deer and other animals? The late fall is mating season for deer, and animals are also on the move to find food and shelter for the upcoming winter. Dawn and dusk are the most dangerous times of day as this is when deer are most active.
Buckling up, slowing down and staying alert are the keys to staying safe. Pay attention to deer crossing signs and continually scan the edge of the road for deer. Remember that deer usually travel in small groups, so if you see one, know there are likely more nearby. Here are additional tips to help keep you safe:
* use your high beams when it is safe to do so and watch for deer eyes reflecting in your headlights;
* when the road configuration allows, drive in the center lane to allow extra space to maneuver;
* honk your horn and flash your lights if you see a deer to help scare it off;
* if you do strike a deer, call police and move your vehicle off the road; do not attempt to move the deer;
* immediately report any injury or damage to your insurance agent. |
 Cold Weather and Fireplace Safety Building a fire in your fireplace is always a great way to ward off the chill of a crisp autumn day. Enjoy the cozy warmth of your fireplace, but follow these precautions to keep you and your family safe. * Have your chimney cleaned regularly, and have it inspected every year by a certified Chimney Sweep at the beginning of the cold season. * Burn only seasoned dry wood. Unseasoned wood can leave a buildup in you chimney that is highly flammable; * Move flammable items (i.e., furniture, drapes, throw rugs) at least three feet away from the hearth; * Make sure you have both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home and test them regularly to confirm they are in good working condition; * Keep a fire extinguisher charged and handy so you can grab it quickly in the event of a fire; * Never leave a fire unattended and be sure to fully extinguish all embers before you go to bed. |
Involved in a Car Accident?
What to Do after the Accident
In the moments after an auto accident, it can be difficult to think clearly and remember what you should do to document the circumstances of the accident. Here's a short checklist to help you focus on what you need to do:
1. Stay Calm. Take a moment to assess the situation: are there any injuries? What is the extent of the damage? 2. Be Safe. Stay as far away from moving traffic as you can. Move your vehicle to a safe location if possible.
3. Call Emergency personnel if necessary. If dialing 911 from a cell phone, be sure to give a detailed description of your location, using route numbers, mile markers, direction of travel and landmarks to pinpoint your location for emergency vehicles.
4. Be sure to exchange contact and insurance information with all others drivers involved in the accident. Don't forget to collect information from any witnesses, too. Your insurance company and/or the police may want to speak to them later.
5. File an Accident Report with the Police. Make sure to get the officer's information as well (name, badge number, contact numbers, etc.)
6. Call your insurance agent as soon as possible to report the accident. |

Heath Care Reform Update
With the recent enactment of the Affordable Health Care Act, significant changes to the health care and health insurance industries will be implemented over the course of the next several years. Each quarter in the Brooker Bulletin, we'll answer a question relating to health care reform to help you understand the various changes brought on by the new legislation. * * * * * * * QUESTION: How will the new health care legislation affect preventative care? ANSWER: Under the Affordable Health Care Act, you and your family may be eligible for preventative services, and no co-payment, co-insurance or any deductible would be required. Depending on your health care plan and your age, you may have access to: blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests, cancer screenings such as mammograms and colonoscopies, weight loss or smoking cessation counseling, routine vaccinations, flu and pneumonia shots, and regular well-baby and well-child visits. This preventative services provision applies to people enrolled in job-related health plans or individual health policies created after March 23, 2010 and effective after September 23, 2010. If your plan is grandfathered, these free services may not be available to you. For more information, please contact your plan administrator or see www.healthcare.gov. |
