Brother Knight:
As you are no doubt aware thanks to all the TV commercials, Election Day is coming on Tuesday, Nov. 2. As faithful and patriotic citizens of this country and state, Iowa Knights take their role in society seriously and strive to fulfill their responsibilities actively informed by their faith. I encourage all Iowa Knights to become informed about the issues and the candidate's stances on them. Seeking the truth and acting upon that knowledge are the hallmarks of a Catholic gentleman and citizen. Let us be then such men!
This notice is to highlight a few of the key points that the bishops of Iowa have made in their "Faithful Citizenship for Iowa Catholics" flier, available for download atwww.iowacatholicconference.org:
1. Before you vote, please consider that a basic test of policy is whether it supports or threatens human life and human dignity. From this, citizens and public officials alike must seriously consider matters related to the common good. Some issues involve acts that are always wrong because they directly and intentionally destroy innocent human life.
2. The bishops support a "yes" vote for a constitutional convention as an opportunity to pass a marriage amendment. Please help people understand that voting for a constitutional convention is just the first step in a process. Any measures that may come out of the convention must be approved by a vote of the citizens of Iowa before they take effect.
3. When you vote, the choice is yours! When you don't vote -- the choice is theirs. Everyone is urged to become informed; then exercise their right and responsibility to vote.
Background material from the Iowa Catholic Conference especially Catholic understanding of marriage was included in the October Knight Lite. These educational / informational sheets are included at the links below.
The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops also has excellent resources to help explain Catholic marriage foundations as well as ideas on how to strengthen men and women in their marriages. For Your Marriage
