| About Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest lay Catholic organization, with 1.8 million members around the world. The order was founded in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney at St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut.
The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. For year ending 2008 the last for which complete data is available, Knights donated more than 68 million hours of volunteer time and $150 million to charity. The order is currently headed by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson.
