e-Patriot - Team Fisher House Edition
June 2012
Greetings!

Thank you very much for supporting Fisher House Foundation through the Team Fisher House Program - as a fundraiser, volunteer, or donor.  Your participation in our program is making a real difference in the lives of service members, veterans, and their families at their greatest times of need.

The newly renamed e-Patriot (Team Fisher House edition) is the bi-monthly e-newsletter designed to keep you informed about our program.   This month's issue is our 25th, so I thought I'd bring you back to the beginning with the Team Fisher House story, then celebrate a 5-year fundraiser whose total tops $225,000, and share a video created about a Joint Base Andrews Fisher House Family.

Sincerely,

Cathy Cabrey

THE TEAM FISHER HOUSE STORY - CELEBRATING OUR 7th YEAR and 25th ISSUE
Fitness Magazine Article Cathy Cabrey and Stacy Toner met in fall of 2003 through their battalion's Family Readiness Group. Both their husbands were deployed to Iraq from Fort Riley, Kansas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Stacy's husband had command of a brigade reconnaissance troop and Cathy's husband was Stacy's husband's battalion commander.  As military spouses, they focused on helping others during the year-long deployment. As individuals, they focused on not only surviving the separation, but thriving as well.

Their friendship began with a conversation about Cathy dabbling with the idea of running a marathon "some day."  Stacy suggested that "some day" could be now.  They became training partners that same week and added a small local marathon 9 months in the future to their calendars. Cathy and Stacy quickly found that marathon training gave them much needed time to decompress and the physical exercise to relieve the constant stress of a deployment.  It was great therapy.

Six months after their successful completion of the Gobbler Grind Marathon, in Kansas City, Kansas the Army moved Stacy and Cathy to different parts of the country, but their connection remained strong. In early 2006, after a particularly inspirational run, Cathy Cabrey presented the idea of a military spouse team at the Marine Corps Marathon team to Fisher House; the Foundation was immediately on board.  When Cathy called Stacy to ask her to coach this grassroots team, Stacy didn't hesitate for a moment to say "yes."   The Team Fisher House program was born.

5th ANNUAL CHARITY LACROSSE SHOWCASE
2012 LAX Photo

Lakewood, Ohio - April 24, 2012 - Burning River Lacrosse announces the results of its 5th annual Fisher House Charity Lacrosse Showcase to benefit the Greater Cleveland Fisher House. This year's event was held on Saturday April 21, 2012 at Hawken School's Walton Stadium. The event featured varsity and junior varsity games between area High Schools including Hawken School, University School, West Geauga, Avon Lake, Orange, Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Kenston, and Stow-Munroe Falls. The event also featured guest speakers Dodi and Loren Mounts, who shared their family's story and Fisher House experiences with the event participants and attendees.

The cold, wind, and rain did not deter fans from coming out and supporting this year's event, which raised approximately $44,000 for the Greater Cleveland Fisher House.

"We really appreciate everyone who braved the weather and came out to support this year's fund raiser," stated Woody Calleri, Director. "The funds raised will support the building of the Greater Cleveland Fisher House and its mission of providing a "home-away-from-home" for America's military families so that they can be with their severely wounded and/or ill family member(s) during those service members' medical treatment and/or lengthy physical and/or occupational therapy treatments.

Event revenues were generated through sponsorships, donations, t-shirt and short sales, ticket sales, and concessions sales. This year's event marks Burning River Lacrosse's fifth Fisher House event with a 5 year fundraising total of approximately $225,000.

"On behalf of the Fisher House Foundation, The Burning River Lacrosse players, coaches, and families, the high school participants and our program sponsors would like to thank everyone who donated, attended or volunteered at this year's event," said Calleri. "We hope to continue building the event each year. With another successful Fisher House Showcase behind us, we hope to have our biggest and best event in 2013."

Thank you, Woody Calleri and the rest of the showcase committee for your time, effort, and dedication to Fisher House Foundation!
