Greetings!
Thank you for subscribing to the Team Fisher House Journal - eNews for fundraisers, volunteers and donors.  This monthly newsletter was designed to keep you informed about the latest Fisher House and Team Fisher House happenings.

As a grassroots fundraising program, Team Fisher House depends on the contributions of our participants (fundraisers, volunteers and donors) for story submissions. If you have a story idea that you would like featured in the next TFH Journal, please contact me!

Featured Fundraiser - Tim BurrTop
Tim Burr Collage"You're what?" was the common reply from family friends and service members. My response, usually a partial repeat, was "I am raising funds for the Fisher House, please support them while I race the Tacate Baja 500 on my dirt bike." (The Baja 500 is an off-road race that takes place on Mexico's Baja California Peninsula in early June)

With quirky faces, their replies followed a common theme: "You can get hurt" or "That sounds dangerous."

I responded, "While I may fall a few times during the race,  it can't compare to what my brother and sister service members will face when they return from combat less than 100%."

I added on, "Remember when you played soccer as a young lad and your parents cheered you on from the sidelines? How'd that make you feel? Well, that feeling is a major part of the service that a Fisher House provides to service members' families by allowing a family to reside in a home-away-from-home with a recovering Veteran."

I have always been intense, loved dirt riding, and was not one to run a marathon.  I chose a different venue for my endurance challenge - the Baja 500.  Overall, I completed more than 1,300 miles on a dirt bike in the desert over the course of 6 days (including the pre-run).

It's one month later and my right hand is still a little numb! My race is over, but the race for our returning vets is constant.

$2,190 was raised through my Team Fisher House campaign to support the Foundation.  Thank you, Fisher House, and the donors who supported my campaign!

Thank you, Tim, for raising funds and awareness for Fisher House at the 2011 Baja 500!

KSFO Logo
As a proud supporter of our military, KSFO 560 AM in San Francisco is proud to partner with Fisher House to help the brave men and women and their families who have been affected by injuries suffered in the continuous fight for our freedom.  Fisher House provides a service to military families that the average American may not know about, but should.  KSFO 560 AM raised funds and awareness for Fisher House so even more military families can benefit from their services.

Brian Sussman's Morning Show on Friday, May 27 had a very special LIVE broadcast from the Palo Alto Fisher House, where he interviewed Fisher House guests.

In the second hour, Ken Berry (KSFO Program Director) and Anthony Licciardi (KSFO Director of Marketing) talked about KSFO's fantastic on-air fundraising campaign for Fisher House Foundation over the Memorial Day weekend.

KSFO set their initial fundraising goal at $6,000, but in a stunning display of their inspired and dedicated on-air talent, they raised more than $145,605!

Thank you, KSFO, and your top-notch on-air talent, for being Champions for Military Families!

A Guest's Story - Ortiz Family

Marine Lance Cpl. Jorge Ortiz
Marine Lance Corporal Jorge Ortiz

Marine Lance Cpl. Jorge Ortiz is in pain.

A combat photographer, Ortiz was taking pictures of a captured weapons cache in Sangin, Afghanistan, on Jan. 15 when he stepped on a buried explosive device.

The blast ripped off his legs above the knees and snapped off four fingers on his left hand and the thumb on his right hand.

Classified as a triple amputee, Ortiz is now an inpatient at the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center at the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Palo Alto - one of four VA centers nationwide staffed and equipped specifically to treat the most grievously wounded U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq.

His mother and 7-year-old sister have moved into Fisher House across the street from the hospital to provide moral support. The facility provides free housing for military families whose loved ones are receiving care.  The VA found a translator for Ortiz's mother so she can talk to his doctors and has enrolled his sister in school.

Still, Ortiz has some advantages. He is known among the medical personnel for his determination.

When other patients are taken to outings such as the movies in Palo Alto or Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, Ortiz prefers to stay at the hospital and work on his memory and coordination therapy and his stretching exercises.
