Special Announcement - Team Fisher House has Race Slots at the SOLD OUT 2011 Army Ten-Miler! | |
Thanks to four dedicated members of the Fisher House staff, who were willing to stay up VERY late to sign up, Team Fisher House was able to secure a limited number of race slots at the 2011 Army Ten-Miler. This race, with a field of 30,000 runners, sold out completely in fewer than 24 hours!
The 27th Annual Army Ten-Miler will take place on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011 at 8 a.m. The 10 mile road race is the third largest in the world and is the Army's premier running event. The race course begins and ends at the Pentagon and runs through the nation's capitol. Military and civilian runners come from across the world to take part in this annual tradition.
Team Fisher House secured race slots at this prestigious event to enable Fisher House supporters to become part of our fundraising team. The funds raised at the 2011 ATM will go towards the construction of the new Fisher House at the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro, TN.

Featured Event - Support for Fisher House at Commissaries Around the World
| |

Throughout the month of May, Acosta Sales and Marketing is sponsoring its Fisher House sale in all commissaries on our military bases, both in the U. S. and overseas. One of the companies in the sale is Newman's Own, offering 75 cents off coupons for its salad dressings, pasta sauces, or salsa. Newman's Own has been a major supporter of Team Fisher House since its inception and is again our pasta dinner sponsor for our Marine Corps Marathon team in 2011.
For Acosta, and its predecessor company, C. Lloyd Johnson Co., Inc., this is the 15th year sponsoring this sale, with each participating company giving special savings to commissary shoppers while pledging a donation to Fisher House Foundation for each case of its product sold. Fisher House Foundation has received more than a half million dollars from this promotion since its inception in 1997. Thank you Acosta and the companies you represent.
In June, MaxiSaver, a company that prints and distributes coupons for commissary shoppers, is sponsoring its first Fisher House promotion. Participating companies offer special prices on their products during the month and each will make a donation to Fisher House Foundation.
Also in June, in the Army and Air Force exchanges, Procter & Gamble will have an in-store promotion on its total portfolio of brands. Each purchase will result in a fifty cent donation to Fisher House Foundation, to a maximum of $50,000.
The list of participating companies and products is too lengthy to reprint, but we do acknowledge and thank each for its support to Fisher House Foundation. And to our supporters who have shopping privileges at military commissaries and exchanges: Your purchases of any of the products offered during these special sales will both save you money and result in donations to the Fisher House program.

Featured Fundraiser - Steve Shipowitz
| I am new to running, I started in August of 2010. At that time I also weighed 210 pounds. At that point I couldn't run a half a mile without stopping. As I started to lose weight, my miles increased. As my miles increased, the thought of doing races became a reality. I was able to lose 35 pounds and run my first 5K in November of 2010.
That went so well, finished in 27:45, that I set a goal of running one race per month during 2011. It's the middle of May and so far so good with that goal. I thought my longest race this year would be a 10K, but now it looks to be a half marathon. I schedule my races by how it fits into my schedule and who benefits from the race. I saw the Navy 10 Nautical Miler and I thought there was no way I could do it, but being the competitive person that I am, I decided to take the plunge. I chose this race for several reasons, but the most important was who it benefitted. I had never heard of Fisher House, but after researching, I knew it was the right one for me. I grew up in Norfolk, VA, home to the world's largest Navy base, so this race hit home.
I have never really raised funds before, so I just figured I would go after a modest goal of $500 and see what happened. What happened was an outpouring of support from my family and friends. Just within a couple of days of sending out the first email, I was almost at $500, time to raise the bar. In the first email, I let everyone know about my weight loss and running. Even some of my closest friends and relatives were unaware of the dramatic lifestyle changes I had made. This, along with the information I gave them about Fisher House, sealed the deal. I sent out an update email once a month about my fund raising and weight loss with a picture of me. I have now lost more that 50 pounds and have run 10 miles at one time. Unfortunately at my most recent race I suffered an injury. I was sidelined for 3 weeks. I have begun training again and I know I will be ready to run, maybe not as fast as I would like, but I will make it.
As of today, I have raised $1300. As all of my emails say to possible contributors, "I am running for a cause."
Thanks for your dedication and perserverence, Steve. Team Fisher House is honored to have you represent us at the 2011 Navy Ten Nautical Miler on June 5, 2011 in Millington, TN! Back to Top |
