Featured Fundraiser - Chris Roney BackToTop

Chris Roney and FamilyChris Roney

2011 Boston Marathon Competitor

I chose to raise money for the Fisher House Foundation because the work they do helps the families of veterans in a way that no other organization I had heard of could, and I wanted to so something tangible to help support our troops. Allowing a veteran receiving medical care as a result of a combat injury to be near his/her family is something that every person serving should have the ability to do.

Fisher House makes this happen every day and also provides support to those families who have lost their loved ones in service - another extraordinarily valuable service that simply cannot be found elsewhere. The fundraising campaign provided a wonderful opportunity to introduce Fisher House to people who were not familiar with the organization and the wonderful work they do.

During the run I encountered other runners familiar with Fisher House and one who had raised money for Fisher House last year. I am hopeful that races I plan on participating in moving forward create more opportunities to support Fisher House.

Our country needs to rally behind military families, understand their sacrifices, and most importantly, extend our hands to help. Fisher House does this and it felt great to support them.

Thank you, Chris, for raising almost $2,000 for Fisher House Foundation through the Team Fisher House Program!

Featured Event - Burning River Lacrosse Charity Showcase

BRLAX PlayersEstablished in 2005, Burning River lacrosse offers opportunities for players in Northern Ohio, starting with basic skills development through the college recruiting process. About 2,000 players have worked through the program since its inception, and teams have showcased their skills in championship efforts on the club circuit.

Burning River has also always put charity work in the forefront of its mission, whether through impromptu events like last fall's breast cancer research fundraising movement or through their more established efforts.

"We teach kids responsibilities in lacrosse," says Burning River founder Woody Calleri. "But we're also teaching kids how to be responsible in their community. It's something that's overlooked in a lot of other clubs."

The Fisher House Charity Lacrosse Showcase is Burning River's biggest yearly fundraising program. The annual event, which is set for April 23 at Hawken School's Walton Stadium, helps raise money for the Fisher House Foundation.

"It's in keeping with what we're teaching the kids. It's all about being a part of a family," says Calleri. "We wanted to show how people can turn around and help each other. If something happens to you, guys are there."

The event raises money for Fisher House Foundation through program ads, ticket sales, and an online auction.  In the last 3 years, the event has raised more than$125,000 for the families of our wounded service men and women.

Woody Calleri brings in a special guest each year to inspire the players before the tournament begins.  This year' speaker is Sgt. Joe Gross, who lost his leg in a suicide car bomb while serving in Bagdad in 2005.  During his medical treatment and recovery Sgt. Gross and his wife stayed in the Fisher House at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for an extended period of time.

Thank you, Burning River Lacrosse, for raising funds and awareness for Fisher House Foundation!

A Gold Star Family's Story

Dover Fisher House FrontOn March 4, 2011, our lives changed forever. If you have anyone in the armed services, then you know what it means when uniformed Marines are knocking at your front door. My son, Ryan, was home alone and they could not speak to him, but he knew. He called Joyce, and she called me in a panic. We both raced home. Joyce arrived before me, which hurts me to this moment that she faced them without my help. As I drove racing through the streets, I kept praying for a mistake - talking to Jordan - and knowing that the Marines do not make this kind of mistake.

In my home the Staff Sergeant, Captain and Navy Chaplin were at attention, looking at us with a clear-eyed intensity that I came to recognize in every Marine. As the bearers of this horrible news, they carried this burden with so much reverence and compassion but placed our grief above all else. Imagine how difficult this duty is for them and still they press on.

From that moment forward began an odyssey that every step of the way a Marine was with Jordan 24 hours a day until he was laid to rest on March 17, 2011. These same Marines were at our side to support and help us through the "business" of bringing Jordan home. It is these next five days that changed our lives forever.

As family gathered, the Marines assigned to work with Joyce and me heard both our pain and sorrow but remained steadfast. The Marines arranged for Joyce, Julie and me to travel to Dover Air Force Base to meet our son. I have no way for describing what it is like to travel among people living their day-to-day lives while every moment and breath you take is filled with grief and thoughts for your fallen son. What I can say is that without these fierce Marines standing beside us and holding our hands we could not have made it.

We arrived at Dover around 9 on Sunday night. Raw with emotion, we were driven to a special location on base, the Fisher House. We learned that two wonderful patriots, Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, had the notion that homes for families of injured, sick and fallen heroes could be located near hospitals and in Dover so these families are able to be with the servicemen and servicewomen without financial hardship.Dover Fisher House Side...
