In the News: A Book to Benefit Fisher HouseTop

Signature Wound - Rocking TBI, by Garry Trudeau
Signature Wound - Rocking TBI
Signature Wound: Rocking TBI
completes a trilogy of Doonesbury books that examines the impact of combat on American soldiers in Iraq.

A twist of fate brings B. D. to the bedside of SFC Leo Deluca (a.k.a. Toggle), a young HUMV driver and headbanger whose love of ear-bleed battle music had sonically distracted him enough to get his vehicle blown up. Missing an eye and suffering from aphasia, Toggle fights to recover from traumatic brain injury (TBI), a journey of recovery that brings out the best in B. D., his former commander. Toggle's tattooed, metalhead mom initially has reservations about his improbable Facebook romance with an MIT tech-head named Alex, but love blooms. As this engaging story unfolds, Toggle finds himself drawn toward a career in the recording industry, undaunted by the limitations of the New Normal that now defines his life.

Crafted with the same kind of insight, humor, and respect that prompted the Pentagon and the VA to host signings of the two previous books in the trilogy, Signature Wound is a perceptive and timely look at the contemporary soldier's experience.

All author's proceeds from the sale of the book go to Fisher House.

Facebook Shout-Out: Navy Ten Nautical Miler Road Race
2010 Navy Ten Nautical MilerMILLINGTON, Tenn. (Naval Support Activity Mid-South) (NNS) -- The inaugural run of the Navy Ten Nautical Miler road race took place on June 6 at the Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tenn.

ALL RACE PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT FISHER HOUSE FOUNDATION!

This is the first and only race of its kind; no other foot race
has been based on nautical miles before, so those who place first set the world record for their respective age categories. Lt. Cmdr. Isabelle Detter, race director for the Ten Nautical Miler, said the desire of the event is a world-class, national-scale event on a par with races like the Marine Corps Marathon. Over 440 runners participated in Tennessee; 19 runners competed in Afghanistan the previous day.

The Navy Ten Nautical Miler is an event officially sanctioned by USA Track & Field, the national governing body for track & field, long distance running, and race walking in the United States.

Boston Fisher House Interior PhotosDear Mr. Fisher,

I am writing to express my deep gratitude for the kindness I received during a painful and scary time, thanks to the Fisher House effort.  I live in a tiny town of Bethel, Maine and set out on Tuesday, May 11, to have my husband checked out for some shortness of breath and exhaustion with exertion.  By 5pm he was in an ambulance being transported from the Togus VA to the Boston West Roxbury VA Healthcare facility.  My family was shocked and dumbfounded by the sudden need for my husband to undergo a quadruple bypass.  I can't begin to describe the stress level I felt within and around me.  City traffic, Massachusetts drivers - all on top of the life and death questions, worries, fears and hopes for the person more dear to me than even myself.

There are no words to describe the relief and nurture I received when the Fisher House opened on May 17th - the very day of my husband's surgery.  We were, as a family, in such a vulnerable place.  How divine it was to stay in that beautiful home, visit with my sons, and cook a family meal together while someone ran over to visit Stephen for 5 minutes on the hour - all of us taking turns.  The wellbeing your house afforded me was downright angelic.  Please accept by deepest, most open-hearted gratitude.  This process has turned me truly into a Patriot.  All I can say is "God Bless America - her veterans and all those who give love back to them after all they have given."

Thank You!

Elise C.
