Data,"John Mezias, associate professor of management, discusses
decision making under uncertainty and how to minimize potential for large

Successful Small Team Leadership
Traditional views of leadership hold that leading a group
and leading an individual should be handled differently. On a basketball team, for example, is it
better to treat individual players differently?
Each player has a different skill level and role on the team. A natural impulse would be to treat the star
player and the bench player differently.
New research from Joshua Wu, an assistant professor of management
at the School of Business, shows that doing so would be detrimental to the team
as a whole. His study, entitled "Consequences of Differentiated Leadership in
Groups," shows that individual-focused leadership used in a team setting
actually decreases overall group efficacy.
If a leader focuses on individual teams members, each member will
identify with the leader differently and ultimately end up destroying the
collective team spirit. This will lead
to reduced team effectiveness.
Consequently, focusing on the group as a whole will lead to greater
group identification and cohesion, resulting in greater overall group
performance.
Wu states that these are only preliminary findings, but
should provide a good springboard for further research in this area. Read More
