Winter Wildflowers In Sicily |
The mild winter in Sicily brings the delights of wildflowers and foraging for edible wild plants. On a walk yesterday, I came home with bright blue borage blossoms and shocking yellow sorrel for a psychedelic salad, and admired bushy pink valerian and a single red poppy nodding in the midst of an emerald green field.
My prize find was this lovely orchid - Barlia robertiana - notable for its delicate color and intensely sweet scent. It's one of the earliest Mediterranean orchids to come into flower.
Come take a 1-day walk in Sicily, and you'll see not only wildflowers and almond blossoms, but also perfectly ordered countryside with nary a tourist in sight, or pre-historic tombs and Greek ruins, or a take a coastal stroll to admire pink flamingos resting by the turquoise sea.
