Greetings!
As I look outside I am reminded that it is still February. Even though this is Southern California, it is still winter and winter brings rain. Don't get me wrong, we love rain, for many reasons. Mainly we need it, but it also brings snow for skiing, cleans the air, grows the vegetables, and helps with the variety of seasons. To be politically correct, I want to make clear that I am well aware of the historic bad weather the Midwest and East have received this year. Yes, Europe also, and the rains in Australia,... OK. Even so, we are all pretty much very happy when the sun comes out again.
That said, my wife Patty and I are leaving this weekend for the buyers art shows in Philadelphia and Baltimore. The weather has done us a favor and looks very nice. We always have a great time, great food and old friends, and are introduced to some new artists and artwork. It is always exciting to discover new work to bring into the gallery.
You can read about some of the interesting work we have been up to this past month as well as new arrivals. We will begin receiving new pieces from the end of February on, and I will be sending many pictures along. Please call if you would like more images of anything. I will be happy to send them along.
I am happy to welcome back in the gallery the perfume bottles of Mary Angus. I carried her work for many years, and although she sort of slipped over the horizon, we have her back.
Don't forget that if you need a well qualified referral for anything my friends are here to help. With over 100 categories including acupuncture, contracting, pest control, home inspector, and now we have a landscape architect specializing in water design(outside. fountains, streams etc.)
Until next month stay healthy and warm, and thanks for being there.

Hector Guimard
From time to time a good customer of mine, who happens to be an authority on the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements brings me an interesting project. Dr. Zack Hadad is also a Professor at UCLA and lectures in African Art. His collection of Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and African art is mesmerizing. Thus, when he asked to come to his home for a project I was eager.
 Hector Guimard at his desk
Hector Guimard was a noted Art Nouveau Architect and designer. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, and Rennie Mackintosh his achievements not only included architecture, but furniture, metal work(notably the Paris Metro), stone work, and glass as well. I have long loved his flowing lines in his Art Nouveau stained glass windows. You can see why it was a real treat for me to visit Zack. I was not disappointed, he has his desk as well.
Aside from viewing his vast collections(like a mini Louvre)he showed me a pair of Guimard doors that needed restoration. These doors had come from a famous Guimard building in Paris (Castel Baranger). The Castel, which was an apartment building, was Guimard's first major commission and catapulted him to his next commission, the Paris Metro Entrances. Zack had acquired a pair of doors from one of the apartments(each apartment was quite different).

Bob Burns Restaurant Stained Glass

Any of you who have been in the Santa Monica area for a while probably remember Bob Burns Restaurant. It had the best piano bar around as well as prime rib, and steaks among other dishes. One of my customers use to go there often whenever they were in town. When the restaurant closed(sold to Houston's) they purchases several stained glass pieces. The stained glass window above is the pride and joy. It brings back very fond memories. We restored it and are shipping it back to Dallas with the rest of their windows. We will miss it.

Frank Lloyd Wright Sconce

We received a pair of these Frank lloyd Wright shades. Very interesting pieces. One was in very bad shape. all torn apart, but still retaining most of the pieces. They sit on a wooden wall mount making nice sconces. Sorry I forgot to get a before picture |

Stained Glass Window Repair
Very often we are called out to repair "Studio" windows such as this one. The term studio window comes from the 4-5 stained glass studios that supplied many of the builders around Los Angeles from the 1920's until the 1950's. Thousands of these windows were installed in homes from Santa Monica to East Los Angeles. Most of them are quite large 5 feet wide and 7 feet tall or larger. Now that they are approximatekly 80 years old they are in dire need of restoration. In many cases they have been replaced with solid sheets of 1/4" clear glass. A shame to lose these treasures that make up a large part of Los Angeles' architectural heritage. In other cases, such as this one, people have applied silicon over the broken and deteriorated leading to help support and waterproof the window. This was done either because the people did'nt want to occur the expense of restoring the window, or didn't know how to find a stained glass craftsman. The silicon treatment is the WORST thing you can do to a leaded glass window. First the silicon deteriorates the lead came even faster. Secondly when it comes to repairing the broken pieces the time involved in removing the silicone and cleaning the old lead can be lengthy. Best to call an expert for advice.
