SPIRAL is comin' to Humboldt!

I know. Hard to believe, but it's true. It all started with a little vid on youtube

called "Spiral inside at the Biscuit pt. 3" Mm hmm. Ya. So, I watch the vid in late 2007 and was like "Who the hell is this chick & how do I learn to hoop like that??" It wasn't long before I friended her on tribe ('member that? it was pre-facebook). I credit Spiral with providing that spark of inspiration that takes hooping from something fun to something of an obsession. I don't think I can articulate exactly what it is about the way that she moves that I resonate with...and I don't think I need to try. I just friggin' dig it. Always have and always will.

In the summer of 2008, Spiral happened to be headed to Willits to teach at the Movement Play Camp there on the same day I was headed to SF. I got in touch with her and begged for a lesson even though she was frantic to get to the camp. I got my lesson and distinctly remember one tip she gave me about body posture during a particular move. It's so often the subtle adjustment that makes the biggest difference.

We found out rather quickly that we both shared a love of the chakras. Sisters in the flow! Over the last few years, I've seen Spiral expand her skills and grow into the mesmerizing performance artist that she is today. And, for the record, I'd like to say that I'm not at all surprised. I knew from the Biscuit that she was something special. I've always admired Spiral's insistence on embodying the life she feels compelled to live. This is very Chakra 5, by the way...living your truth. Such an inspiration.

So when I say "Spiral is comin' to Humboldt!" What I really mean is "Oh my gawd!!! SPIRAL IS COMING TO HUMBOLDT!!!!!!! SPIRAL IS COMING TO HUMBOLDT!!!!!!" (Jumping up and down!!!) It's kind of a big deal that we have the opportunity to take classes from her right in our own backyard. No traveling to SF or spending hundreds on admission to a major hooping event. Nope. She's comin' to us.

We hoop dance because it makes us feel good. Now, we have the opportunity to play with a flow toy that's relatively new to the scene, the flow wand. Lucky lucky we are! Who's gonna say no to a new way to have fun?? Not me!

Spiral will be teaching Flow Wand technique on Tuesday, April 17th from 6 to 7:15 at the F Street fire arts warehouse in downtown Arcata.

Then she'll be teaching a two hour Dynamic Hoop Embodiment class on Wednesday, April 18th from 5:30 to 7:30 at Redwood Raks in Arcata.

As many of you know, one of my main objectives for teaching Hoop Dance is to have a damn good time with my friends. The more peeps I can teach to hoop, the more friends I have to have fun with. Think of how badass we are all going to be at the farmer's market after learning from Spiral! It's almost too fun to think about.

These workshop are designed to challenge the hooper of any skill level. These workshops are a little more fast paced than the Foundational classes and variations will be given so even the advanced hooper will have skills to work on. If you want to bump up your hoop dance skills, these workshops are definitely for you!
