| In Touch: Happy Holidays! |
|
The Holiday season is a time to give thanks and to acknowledge the many partners who contribute to the work we do at ACOE. It is rewarding to reflect on the results of our work to deepen collaboration, integrate our work and build partnerships with districts, schools and educational agencies; and that involves the world of non-profits and the community. Thank you.
We look forward to seeing you in our upcoming Regional Leadership Forum on January 11, 2012 focusing on "Assessing What Matters".
The Forum will help us to deepen our current focus on curriculum integration and the relationship between teaching, testing, and assessment.
In the coming year, we look to develop partnership opportunities to further our work in career pathways for our youth, STEM education, and improved policies for assessing effective teaching strategies.
Stay In Touch!
-Sheila

A Great Year of Partnerships
Alameda County Office of Education--on the map!
The year was filled with opportunities to affect change.
 | |
Pedro Noguera
|
ACOE hosted Pedro Noguera, a National leading authority on Urban Education at our 4th Regional Leadership Forum; we partnered with an unprecedented coalition of Bay Area Arts organizations to celebrate National Arts In Education Week; and we spearheaded a community forum with Tom Torlakson, our State Superintendent of Public Instruction on the state of our education system.
We are proud of several ground-breaking efforts to unite community with resources across Alameda County.
 | |
Supt. Sheila Jordan and Joel Young, AC Transit
|
ACOE launched the first Freedom Bus Project in partnership with AC Transit; we coordinated the first Educational County-wide Job Fair for all educators in Alameda County; and we collaborated with the California Emerging Technology Fund to host the first Education, Sustainability and Digital Technology EXPO promoting digital inclusion and broadband access.
Our districts also gained local, state, and national recognitions:

Emery USD's check to the California Department of Education
|
We Congratulate Emery USD for gaining local control of their school district!
We salute Oakland's Peralta Elementary and Fremont's James Leitch Elementary for their National Blue Ribbon Award.
During our Annual Teacher of the Year (ToY) Ceremony, we honored Tom Collett, Newark USD's Teacher of the Year, Alameda County's Teacher of the Year and now California's Teacher of the Year! If you missed the ToY ceremony, you can view it here.

Green Service Learning
ACOE Pionners Environmental Stewardship
Learn how our Service-Learning Waste Reduction Projects in Alameda County schools have adopted ways to be 'greener' without building new facilities. Our program is featured in the December edition of Principal Leadership and provides great tools for educators on how to engage students as stewards, decision makers and leaders in creating sustainable communities. First of a kind in Alameda County
Nearly 1,000 educators, students and parents took advantage of an impressive array of resources and hands-on instruction. Over 30 education and digital technology vendors presented the latest in technology, 15 interactive workshops: from digital literacy, to digital photography. Five children walked away with free computers, and Mountain House Elementary School scored big--they won the Grand Prize, a free computer lab for their school! What a day!
