Happy Spring!
In this issue of In Touch, we highlight our commitment to integrative learning and community partnerships. We begin by acknowledging the students, parents, and school administrators who joined us for an evening of dialogue with California's State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson. Our annual celebration of Art IS Education month was a grand and visible success, including the culmination of the Freedom Bus Project with a lively community celebration and Freedom Bus Tour. The Freedom Bus will be in service through May. Look for ACOE-AC Transit Freedom Bus in a neighborhood near you.
We thank you in advance for forwarding on scholarship and internship information to your teachers and students.
Finally, if you serve 7-12th graders, please remind them to update their Dtap booster shot before the new school year begins.
Stay In Touch! Sheila.

An Evening with Tom Torlakson
Educational leaders, students, community engage in dialogue
ACOE hosted Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, parents, students, and school administrators to engage in public discourse about California's educational state of affairs. Supt. Torlakson asked everyone involved in education to work together to reform current measures of student learning, school performance evaluations, and assessment and accountability systems. He urged everyone to help him build a case before the public for the full funding of California's public schools.

Art IS Education & Freedom Bus Project
Integrative learning and collaboration across community agencies--a grand success!
Arts education makes learning visible! Through our partnership with AC Transit to develop The Freedom Bus Project, we made critical connections and shared our commitment to support youth and build sustainable communities.
Collaboration between ACOE, Alameda County Arts Commission, Alameda County Library, AC Transit, and the Alameda County Sustainability Program made this year's Art IS Education celebrations' one of the best ever!
 | | Supt. Sheila Jordan and AC Transit Director Joel Young |
Dozens of Art IS Education events were celebrated county-wide. The grand finale was held at the Oakland School for the Arts where AC Transit co-sponsored The
Freedom Bus Project with artwork created by Berkeley's Arts & Humanities Academy and Juvenile Justice Center students commemorating the 55th anniversary of Rosa Parks' historic bus ride in Montgomery, Alabama, which effectively ignited the modern Civil Rights Movement ~ a fine example of integrative learning!

Service Learning Changes Lives

Anthony Chavez, grandson of the late Cesar Chavez leads John Muir youth into a peace march.
|
Service-Learning is a teaching strategy that connects content standards with community service activities. The Alameda County Office of Education is viewed as a state and national leader in service-learning; having created innovative staff development tools and developed model programs.
At John Muir Middle School and San Leandro High School, both schools are using service-learning to help build culture and climate as part of their "Season of Service, Period of Peace," an effort that stretches from Martin Luther King Day through Cesar Chavez Day at both schools. Students engage in a myriad of activities and that promote non-violence and give back to the community.
To bring service learning to your community, please contact Evan Goldberg at 510-670-4233, or via email at egoldberg@acoe.org. To learn more about the 2011 Season of Service, please click here.
