IN PROMOTION OF THE FRIESIAN. . .
Many of you may have read the Spot Light article about the Friesian horse in the Dec/Jan issue of USDF Connection.
For those of you who are considering purchasing a Friesian I wanted to add the following:
The original Dutch registry KFPS is known for its strict breeding protocol and breed standards. The breed standards are reviewed yearly and over the past 10 years the emphasis has been to breed a more suitable dressage horse and preserve the typical Friesian characteristics.
The so-called "modern-type" or "sport-type" breeding is proving successful, where the Friesian horse is becoming competitive also in the European dressage circuit, where the European Warmblood horse is the typical competitive breed. Their are several of these "modern/sport type" Friesian horse successfully competing on the Grand Prix tours.
Several breeders in the United States, as mentioned in this article, are actively developing and exhibiting this baroque breed with great efforts and success in the USDF circuit.

All horses in the parade were Friesian, except the Lippizaner, the mount of Sinterklaas. He must, by tradition, ride a white horse! (Ok, een schimmel voor ons Nederlanders dan!) The "elfs" are Zwarte Pieten! Zwarte Piet is a companion of Sinterklaas. We celebrate the yearly feast on December 5 where we distribute treats and presents accompanied with personal poems. The characters of Zwarte Piet only appear in the weeks before St. Nicholas feast. They are to amuse children, scatter 'pepernoten' (ginger-cookie treats) and candies for those who come to meet the Sinterklaas.

Sending our home-raised Friesians far away from our farm for training wasn't something we decided on easily. We wanted them to learn the skills they needed to be successful in the ring, but also to keep their trusting nature and love of work. Personality and temperament is important to us, and we wanted to find the right trainer to keep a happy attitude but increase their experience and skill level.
We had considered many trainers, but consistently heard excellent reports about Fryslan Valley's trainer, Arnold Warmels. After meeting him and watching him work, we sent two of our babies to Fryslan Valley for keuring preparation.
My oldest, Poet, who was five, had been ridden about one year and was doing well under saddle, so I asked Arnold to consider showing him for experience at the Ohio Valley Friesian Show, coming up in less than a month. In the month leading up to the show, Poet had the opportunity to experience Breyerfest and then to the Kentucky Horse Park for a WEG preview event. He was ready for the Ohio show and, in his first ever competition, won five ribbons and, more importantly, behaved like a gentleman and did everything he was asked to do. At the Keuring, he was awarded second premie ster and Reserve Grand Champion!
Not only did he accomplish everything we hoped, Arnold also started him in harness. What a thrill it was to take a buggy ride through the meadows at Fryslan Valley with Poet in the harness.
Our three-year-old filly, Rosie, was well-started under saddle and spent hours on the trails as well as working on the lunge line and in the arena. She did a great job at the judging, entering the studbook. She came home last weekend in great shape, eager for work and happy to please.
Not only is Arnold a competent, knowledgeable trainer, we think he truly enjoys getting to know each horse and customizes the training to his or her personality. And he enjoys sharing his knowledge and is expert at explaining his approach and methods so that we could continue the work he has started.
A bonus is Arnold's wife and partner, Lisa, whose personality, work ethic, and love of horses makes being around her a joy. When you train with Fryslan Valley, you not only get a well-trained horse, but you have fun!
