Friesians Perform for Media at Kentucky Horse Park
July 29, 2009

 MediaDay
Arnold Warmels, FHANA Executive Director Jason Tice, Samantha Groeneveld

Once a year the media is invited to the Kentucky Horse Park to view the park and see what is new.  With the Kentucky Horse Park being the host of the 2010 World Equestrian Games  it made sense to do demo's this year to diplay the various competitions that will be taking part during the World Equestrian Games.

FHANA member Arnold Warmels and his niece Samanth Groeneveld performed for the media and other visitors of the Kentucky Horse Park as the Grand Finale of all of the events.  The members of the media and others visitors were in complete amazement of the Friesian breed and the demo that Arnold and Samantha performed.

At one instance there was a group of kids standing up and clapping along with the music in total excitement for what they were witnessing.  Needless to say the Friesians received high marks by members of the media and all visitors at the Kentucky Horse Park today.

"This was indeed a great honor," says trainer Arnold Warmels, "we were happy to participate as FHANA members and assist in the sports training aspect of the Friesian breed for all the world to see."

 HORSES HORSES GALA
Ocala, Florida
 July 11-12, 2009

Fryslan Valley Sport Horses trainer, Arnold Warmels, was invited to host as breed clinician for the Friesian and GypsyClinican breeds at the Horses Horses Horses Gala in Ocala, FL July 11-12, 2009.

This event went to benefit the Ocala, FL based, Horses N Heroes charitable program whose primary  focus is educating at-risk children in an equine therapeutic environment.
Arnold and several of his clients happily agreed  to the invitation and traveled  from Tennessee to Ocala to present two beautiful show stopping Friesians and a beautiful black & white Gypsy Cob.
In their first gala musical performance on Saturday afternoon, Wietse and Karst van de Olijftak  brought the house down.  HaflingerMany people in attendance had never before seen the dramatic trotting action of the Friesian.  Fryslan Valley was well received with applause and continuous cheering!

On Saturday, July 11 following the action performance, Arnold conducted a 30 minute question and answer session for the interested crowd who wanted more information about the FPS and FHANA.  While speaking, both Wietse and Karst were  in the roundpen with Arnold.

Their sparkling and comical personalities, indicative of this people oriented breed, shined through.  At one point, Karst decided to just lay down, yawn and stretch, while Redondo sat his chin on Arnold's shoulder!  They definitely kept the crowd entertained and the cameras continued to click.

By the time the session was over, many followed us back to the barn inquiring for more information and anxious for the next session.  In the second well attended session,  Arnold and his niece Samantha Groeneveld, showed the Friesian under saddle, in a Dressage presentation, highlighting the difference in the older style more Baroque Friesian, and then moving towards the more sports oriented Friesian of today.  This session was also open to question and answers and following the segment, continued at the barn as interested parties continued to remain at our stall section.

On Sunday, July 12, Arnold gave a 30 minute session with the Shirley Brooks Whirley owned Gypsy Cob entry, King Arthur.    Arnold gave a brief long lining demonstration on starting yourArthur horse to drive, followed by a question and answer segment.

They completed the Gypsy segment with Samantha and Arthur giving a riding exhibition in a beautiful period costume musical freestyle.

Later in the afternoon on Sunday, July 12, we had the immense pleasure of visiting the home of Carol and Jack Angelbeck, Ocala, FL, home to Bluffview Clydesdales and Friesians.   For over 14 years Carol and Jack have been breeding FPS Registered Friesians.  We enjoyed the tour of their farm and getting acquainted with their beautiful black pearls.

My favorite part of this stop was spending time with their 6 week old Feike foal.

It was a long drive home, but the hospitality (and swimming pool!) shared at the home of the Whirley's was a welcome break in the middle of this hot hot summer.

 BREYERFEST 20th Anniversary
Lexington, KY

The Fryslan Valley Sport Horse Team, members of FHASE, along with OVFHA Chapter members  Kim Fischer, Barb Renica, Michelle Whipple,  and Kristen Hassen, brought out their star studded Friesians to delight the standing room only packed arena at the Lexington Kentucky Horse Park July 17-19, 2009.

StaceyWestfallBreyer was anxious to make this Birthday Bash one for everyone to remember and hosted a star studded lineup of exhibitors including respected horsewoman Stacey Westfall, trick trainer Tommy Turvey, Templeton Thompson and "Blue Jeans,  Miley Cyrus's horse from the block buster movie Hannah Montana the Movie.

To get this party started, Vice President of Breyer, Stephanie Macjeko trotted brilliantly into the arena aboard Wietse,StephRedon owned by Janis Oliver.   FOllowing the introduction, Wietse was lead horse in the majestic parade of breeds!

The Friesians not only performed in costume to the delight of the children, who came searching for "the beautiful princess" but also performed a very nice threesome Dressage demonstration, which received rave reviews from an FEI Dressage Judge who was visiting the park.

"We spent three days talking with people virtually from around the world," says Lisa Warmels who organized this group effort.  "Every few minutes, I kept hearing, this is my dream horse by the people stopping by our stalls.  Our horses did not disappoint.  They stood licking the hands of the kind visitors who just wanted a moment to touch one of these precious black pearls.

As the visitors stood admiring, it was our opportunity to talk about the KFPS and FHANA and explain that in buying a Friesian, you are not just buying a horse, but you are buying a piece of history that comes with an enthusiastic staff who is ready to assist you in every way possible."

"In an event of this magnitude, with over 6,000 visitors a day, it was great to have two FHANA chapters join together to bring out their horses and promote the breed together, " says Arnold HaflingerWarmels.  "It was a great pleasure organizing this event with President of the OVFHA Chapter, Brian Phipps and the members of his chapter who came out to support us.  We had a blast.

This was one of the most fun events we have attended all season and it's due to the camaraderie and friendship found amongst Friesian owners.

EquineER ECLIPSE PRESS ANNOUNCES

RELEASE OF EQUINE ER
Book Takes Readers Inside Famous Veterinary Hospital

Lexington, KY (July 13, 2009) - Readers can now take a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the leading equine veterinary hospitals with the release of Equine ER: Stories From a Year in the Life of an Equine Veterinary Hospital. Published by Eclipse Press, the book captures the often dramatic, sometimes heartbreaking, but all-inspiring stories author Leslie Guttman witnessed during the past year as the proverbial "fly on the wall" at the world-renowned Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky.

Written in the tradition of James Herriot, Equine ER explores the power of the human-horse connection, through the lens of Rood & Riddle. At the hospital, an elite team of vets performs cutting-edge medicine on their four-footed patients, whether it is an experimental drug on a mare dying of pleural pneumonia, or surgery to save a famous racehorse. The book follows the emotional journeys that doctors and owners embark on when a beloved horse becomes ill.

"Equine ER is a wonderful book, wrenching, uplifting, and a powerful window into the great love, empathy, and connection humans have for horses and other animals," said Jon Katz, the New York Times best-selling author whose most recent book is Soul of a Dog (Random House, 2009). "It is an emotional thriller, really, a rollercoaster, as dramatic and well-paced as it is well-written and brilliantly observed. Anybody who has ever loved an animal will be hypnotized by these wonderful stories." Susan Richards, author of New York Times best-seller Chosen by a Horse (Soho Press, 2006) calls Equine ER "as thrilling and drama-filled as any of the popular hospital shows on television today."

Equine ER is also a window into the unique, pastoral way of life that still exists on Bluegrass horse farms, one largely untouched by time and where doctors still make house calls on their equine patients.

Throughout her time at Rood & Riddle, Guttman documented her experience through blog posts, photographs, and video. Fans can follow the making of Equine ER at http://cs.thehorse.com/blogs/equine-er/, part of the blog stable of The Horse, a monthly equine care magazine.

Advance praise:

Early buzz: "Equine ER is a wonderful book, wrenching, uplifting, and a powerful window into the great love, empathy, and connection humans have for horses and other animals. It is an emotional thriller, really a rollercoaster, as dramatic and well-paced as it is well-written and brilliantly observed. More early buzz

"Equine ER is as thrilling and drama-filled as any of the popular hospital shows on television today. As Guttman takes us along on rounds with the vets from the prestigious Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, we enter the life and death world of some of the most famous racing barns in America. Over and over, Guttman shows us that even in the high stakes world of racing, compassion and an enduring love of equines is the guiding force behind the decisions of this extraordinary group of veterinarians ... A great read for anyone who loves a bunch of good stories centered around the hustle and bustle of an emergency room - equine or otherwise." Susan Richards, author of New York Times best-seller "Chosen by a Horse," as well as the book, "Chosen Forever."
