A Worthwhile Reminder
It's a fact. Early detection of breast cancer is a key to survival. It's also a fact that many women do not remember to schedule regular mammograms or perform regular breast self-exams. Are you a part of these statistics?

A significant percentage of women over the age of 40 do not remember to schedule a regular mammogram, as directed by her doctor - a vital tool for detecting breast cancer at an early stage .Unfortunately many women also fail  to perform regular breast self-exams, which can be a helpful step for detecting breast changes that may occur between annual physicals or mammograms
Over 90 percent of breast cancer patients survive when cancer is detected in early stages and treatment is begun promptly.

Greetings!

The only way to eliminate breast cancer is with research & awareness.  Knowing that nearly 200,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year inspires many organizations to find creative ways to make donations. Not one of us, either directly or indirectly, has avoided the effect of this devastating disease.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Please join "Feller & Friends" as we walk to support American Cancer Society's Stride for a Cure on October 18th. The money raised is important to further important research by ACS.  Our manufacturers have given us lots of pink samples for our goodie bags so mark your calendar to join us!  Check out all of the fun pink office essentials and do some shopping for a cause.  A portion of the proceeds from these items are donated for Breast Cancer research.

sticky note

16 oz. white chocolate chips
2 Tbsp. shortening
1 pound fresh strawberries with leaves
Pink or red candy food coloring*

Insert toothpicks into the tops of the strawberries. In a double boiler, melt the chocolate and shortening, stirring occasionally until smooth. Mix in candy food coloring until desired color is reached. Holding them by the toothpicks, dip the strawberries into the chocolate mixture. Turn the strawberries upside down and insert the toothpick into styrofoam for the chocolate to cool.  For added decoration, make extra white or regular chocolate and drizzle pink strawberries with design.
** Make sure you specifically buy candy food coloring, traditional food coloring will not work right.
Let me introduce you to a few of Aunt Martha's kids
If you saw this group of boys walking on the street, you would probably cross to the other side and probably be intimidated. Now picture this same group, one boy with a Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal backpack, another carrying a stuffed bear - seems very contradictory doesn't it?

I had the pleasure of meeting these boys at the summer carnival held at the Aunt Martha's Childrens Reception Center Shelter downtown.  Jo-Jo, Jameal, and Chester enjoyed the attention they received from myself and my employees - and the blongo ball game we brought.  They were anxious to win the game and be rewarded wtih tickets that they could turn in for many different prizes.  Seeing that they turned in their tickets for stuffed animals, Wayne asked them if they were winning them to give them to the teenage girls that were there?  No, we were told, they were keeping them and they were very proud of these winnings.  Not totally understanding why 16 - 17 year old boys would be so excited about stuffed animals, we asked one of the counselors.  We were told that many of these kids have never had a stuffed animal before so they treasure them.  When I think of all the stuffed animals my kids had when they were younger, it really touched me to think how we have taken something like this for granted.

Homecoming - most of us have gone to our HS Homecoming, no big deal!  Well, to 3 teenage girls who are living in one of Aunt Martha's group homes it is a big deal!  It means that they are fitting into their high school and having a normal high school experience.  Many of the teenagers living in these homes have been taken from their families or have run away - they have not had a normal teenage experience.  Many of them are very behind in their studies, and there is a stigma about living in a group home.  They don't have the in clothes, and it is hard to fit in.  High school is hard enough without this baggage.  So for these girls to experience being asked to the dance, the excitement of getting a dress, even if it is from a resale shop, and doing their hair - it's a big deal!

Little things that we take for granted are so very important to these kids.
Aunt Martha's Gift Express
sticky note

Last year with the help of our customers & suppliers, we were able to provide much needed hope to over 25 children who are clients of Aunt Martha's Youth Services, such as the kids above & and collected over $ 500 for the shelter downtown.

We are inviting you to help again this year.  We will be getting the names and gift suggestions of specific children shortly.  Perhaps you & a few coworkers could go together to sponsor a child or make a donation to be put towards gifts for the children who end up spending Christmas at the shelter - you will be providing more than just gifts.  You will be showing these children that the spirit of Christmas is alive and that they have not been forgotten.  We will have more information shortly.

There are many well-documented benefits to our main streetcommunities and to each of us to choosing local, independently owned businesses.  When you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, & service providers -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. We realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally and so merely ask you to Think Local FIRST!

We are highlighting the following local businesses who are participating in our "Buy Local" Program.
