sticky noteThe Local Buzz

In the smallest towns, bustling cities, & everything in between, more citizens lament losing a sense of community & local character.  Meanwhile, national chains continue displacing locally-owned businesses countrywide.  What are the economic costs to our communitites as absentee-owned chains displace locally-owned businesses?

Of course, we usually choose to do business where we preceive the best value for our time and money.  But in an age where we're bombarded with thousands of corporate advertisements daily, perceptions may differ widely from reality. It's as easy to accept themes promoted in those corporate ads as it is to overlook the values independent businesses provide us, both personally and in our communities.
Economic Value of
Independent Businesses
It's time to consider the real costs to a community that loses it locally-owned business base.  Local businesses employ an array of supporting services.  They hire local accountants, insurance brokers, computer consultants, mechanics, banks, restaurants etc.

In contrast, a chain store typically is a clone of other units and uses a minimum of local services.  A company-owned store's profits are promptly exported to corporate headquarters.

Dollars spent at community-based merchants create a mulitplier effect in the local economy, meaning that from each dollar spent at a local merchant, three or more times as much typically goes back into the local economy compared to a dollar spent at a chain store.  For example, a 2003 economic impact study in Austin, Texas by Civic Economics, concluded for every $100 spent at a chain, $ 13 remained in the community, while $45 remained when spent with local businesses.
Maintaining Community Character
When asked to name our favorite restaurant, cafe or shop, it's typically a unique local business.  Those businesses define our sense of place, but we often forget their survival depends on our patronage.

Local owners, typically having invested much of their life savings in their businesses, have a natural interest in the community's long-term health.  Community-based businesses are essential to charitable endeavors; their owners frequently serve on local boards and support numerous causes.

Yes, some chains give back to townes, and not all local businesses are exemplary models. However, the overall impacts are clear; locally-owned businesses play a key role in our community that chains rarely do, while chains often even undermine community interest.

Feller Business Solutions is a local owned business.  We support our community in a number of different ways for using local services for auto, insurance, accounting etc.  We also support local events such as Bensenville's Music in the Park".  Our annual scholarship award has helped local students achieve their goals of attending college.

Many of our customers are also local businesses and we want to help you succeed.  We are excited to launch our new "Buy Local" Stimulus Program.  To find out more about this program - please see artical in this newsletter.

Not an Ordinary Flu Season; How to Prepare Your Workplace
flu
H1N1 flu (also known as "swine flu") has been declared the first official pandemic in 41 years.

While many seem to feel we dodged a bullet earlier this year, World Health Organization statistics show a continual increase in the number of H1N1 cases rather than the leveling off that was initially expected. Plus, flu season is right around the corner, which creates an additional reason for concern. Now is not a time for panic - but it is a time for preparation.

Have you considered how you could continue to fill customer orders if a significant portion of your workforce was out sick, or caring for sick family members? Do you have educational efforts in place to help contain the spread of disease? Do your leave policies encourage workers to self-quarantine rather than come to work and possibly infect others?

Feller Business Solutions is here to help!  We can provide you with materials to help in educating your employees - click here to request information

We also have the items you need  to keep germs at bay - masks, hand sanitizer, disinfectent, kleenex & more.  Plan ahead and buy early - many items were hard to get earlier this year!

Can I Have Your John Hancock?

sticky noteRecently there was a discussion regarding handwriting, specificaly focusing on signatures.  A school teacher mentioned that the modern-day curriculum included less and less cursive writing instruction for younger children. The kids are getting in front of the computer earlier and learning to type efficiently is actually more important in the modern-day workplace, and will become even more significant in the future. The teacher a champion of learning good writing techniques reasoned that you will still need to sign legal or business documents.

"People sometimes write an X or an undulating line for all they care,"  At a doctors office, for instance you can find all kinds of illegible signatures, however it is said that some of the doctors purposely have poor handwriting to prevent against possible forgery of prescription orders. Then, the subject of the "John Hancock" came up.

Possibly the most recognized signature of all-time, a "Hancock" stands for boldness, artful expression and individuality.

This leads me to imagine the broad spectrum of signatures that are out there, and about the people who create them. I broke the signature spectrum into several parts:

When the floods of 1997 hit Grand Forks, North Dakota, families had to be evacuated from their homes as levees failed to hold back the waters. As one man evacuated his family, he placed a Post-itŪ Note on his patio door to alert city workers that the house's natural gas had already been turned off. Returning to his home weeks later, the man found that his deck was in his neighbor's yard. Furniture inside the house had been recklessly rearranged by the receding waters. But the Post-itŪ Note? It remained exactly where he'd left it.

Fashionable Notes

3m fashionTo help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Post-itŪ Notes, fashion designer Ilze Vitolina created an impressive line of avant-garde evening wear fashioned from Post-itŪ Notes. To create the clothing, the notes were placed on a durable plastic, and plastic strips were used as fasteners. Each dress was named for the color palette of the notes from which it was made. Pictured here are the Neon and Ultra dresses. In all, Vitolina created eleven dresses - including a wedding dress - as well as several hats and a bridal bouquet. The dresses were modeled at a 2000 fashion show sponsored by 3M Latvia.
