Coaster Spine

Greetings,

I am delighted to announce that a solo show of my Thrills & Chills series will be exhibited at the
Houston Arts Alliance Gallery in Houston, TX from October 14 through December 31. This exhibit is generously funded by the Houston Arts Alliance and organized by the Houston Center for Photography. I am deeply grateful to both the HAA and the HCP for their support for my work and for making me feel so welcome in the Houston arts community.
I also want to thank HCP Executive Director Bevin Bering Dubrowski and her staff (Jason Dibley, Caroline Docwra, Sandy Vitrano) for working long hours over the last month to produce this exhibition.

There will be an opening reception at the Alliance Gallery (3201 Allen Parkway) this Thursday from 6-8 PM. If you are interested in purchasing work from this exhibition, please contact the John Cleary Gallery.

In addition to preparing for this show, I have been traveling over the last month to create new images for my  Elderly Animals series. I also have a few other exciting developments that I'm writing to share with you.

Thanks for reading! I look forward to hearing from you.

Warm Regards,
Isa

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Prints from my Elderly Animals series are under consideration for acquisition by the
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. "Pumpkin, Age 28" is currently on exhibit at the Caroline Wiess Law Building in the museum as part of the Photo Forum Exhibition. Members of the Photo Forum collecting group will meet in November to vote on which pieces from the exhibition will be purchased by the museum. Other artists with work under consideration include friends Kyohei Abe, Rania Matar, Nancy Newberry and Phil Toledano. I want to extend my warm gratitude to Natalie Zelt, Anne Wilkes Tucker, and members of Photo Forum for supporting my work.

Philadelphia Weekly Review

My work was featured in a review for the show "In Review" that was exhibited through the summer at Gallery 339 in Philadelphia, PA. Critic Roberta Fallon writes:

"Isa Leshko's prints of aging farm animals are a reminder of the inevitability and senescence and death....Leshko's black-and-white prints offer a different kind of beauty than that of most animal art, which tends to revel in the vitality of the natural."

Gallery 339

Select images from my Elderly Animals series are on view in the upstairs gallery at Gallery 339. Stop by the gallery to view my work and to also see their current exhibition, Phillip and Edward Toledano: Days with My Father which features moving images from Phil's recently released book and works on paper by his father.

Recent Shoots

In the last month, I've had a few memorable shoots for my Elderly Animals project. I photographed a 19-year old cat, Sophie, who was adopted last year by a kind volunteer at the Houston SPCA after her original family surrendered her to the shelter.

I also visited Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY where I photographed elderly cows, sheep, pigs, chickens and turkeys. In late September, I visited Wolf Park in Battle Ground, IN where I photographed a 17-year old wolf named Kiri and a 15-year old wolf named Apollo. I will never forget getting licked on the face by Kiri, who is a rather playful wolf in spite of his age. I am grateful to the staff at Farm Sanctuary and Wolf Park for being so generous with their time and for allowing me to photograph their animals.

I look forward to sharing with you the images and audio interviews from these recent shoots. I am still looking for subjects for this project. Please e-mail me if you would like to suggest an animal for this project.
