American Baptist Home Mission
June/July 2010

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior!

It may be hot and humid and your kids may be on vacation--but you're not. You and I both know that ministry is a year-round, 24-7 commitment. Still, summer is a good time to kick it up a notch, to work on ministering in new ways. Read on to find out about transformational opportunities for personal faith development as well as programs for small and large groups, even your entire congregation. American Baptist Home Mission Societies seeks to support your ministry in all sorts of places, spaces and times.

Build faith and camaraderie in your church by putting summer to good use

ABHMS logo smallerIt's been almost five years since hurricanes Katrina and Rita stormed through the Gulf Coast, but many in the region still suffer from the vestiges of that devastation. You or a work group from your church can serve as the hands and feet of Christ and bring God's healing and helping love to the rebuilding effort in New Orleans. Join the American Baptist Home Mission Societies contingent participating in the National Council of Churches Ecumenical Work Week, August 1-7. No experience required. Find out more now, because the deadline for registration has been extended to July 16.

Calling all women in ministry ... Do you face unique challenges because of your gender?
ABHMS logo smallerIf you could use some support and encouragement or fellowship and friendship with like-minded ministry professionals who share similar concerns, register today for "Women Together: Lifting and Serving One Another," August 19-20 in Detroit, Mich. This conference will offer opportunities for worship along with workshops and panel discussions for those serving in a wide range of ministry settings, and it's designed for those who are ordained as well as those who are not ordained. So come one, come all, but just come. There's always comfort to be found with those who walk in your shoes.

Help your congregation connect with God's call for the church in the 21st century
ABHMS logo smallerIn these changing times, the church faces challenges on all fronts. Has your congregation found answers to survival and relevancy in this brave new world? If not, join American Baptist Home Mission Societies' Missional Church Learning Experience. All that's required is a desire to move forward and a willingness to try new ideas, along with a commitment to listen for God's word. American Baptist congregations across the country participating in this learning experience are discovering previously unimagined transformation. Read about it in the latest issue of The Christian Citizen, which was devoted to what's happening with the missional church.

Lessons from the black church to strengthen your ministry
ABHMS logo smallerThe recent Judson Press book--What We Love about the Black Church by two white pastors-turned-academics--has garnered a lot of publicity, including an interview with Roland Martin, an article from the Associated Baptist Press and a piece on The Huffington Post. Discover the buzz for yourself and see why Bob Cornwall, editor of "Sharing the Practice," wrote, "Take and read, you will be blessed, especially if you take the step of crossing the boundaries between communities." Read Cornwall's complete review on his blog. Order the book online and save 20% or call 800-458-3766.
