IRS Tax Tip #7

Tax
Consider electronic filing

When you file electronically you will get your refund in about half the time it takes when you file a paper return.

If you've never filed your tax return electronically, you should definitely consider trying it in 2009.  Join the millions of taxpayers who are saving time and money to file their tax returns without the many headaches often associated with filing a paper return.

Here are the top seven reasons close to 90 million people filed their tax returns electronically in 2008:

1. It's easy.  Your tax preparer can usually file a state tax return at the same time as your federal tax return. Many tax preparers use special software that allows them to file electronically for their clients.

2. It's accurate.  No more human errors because the e-file process (and your tax preparer) checks for math errors and necessary information.  This not only increases the accuracy of your return, but it also reduces the need for correspondence with the IRS to clarify errors or omissions.

3. You'll get your refund faster.  When you e-file, you can get your refund in as little as ten days.

4. There are more payment options.  With e-file, you can file your return early, but wait to pay any balance due by the April deadline. You can also pay electronically using a credit card, electronic funds withdrawal or in some cases the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (check with your tax preparer for more information).

5. It's fast.  You don't have to make a trip to the post office. In fact, you won't even need to walk to the mailbox to send your return.

6. You'll know the IRS received your return.  The IRS will send your tax preparer an electronic notification acknowledging receipt of your return.

7. You'll have peace of mind.  When using a qualified tax preparer who files electronically you can rest easy knowing your information was submitted accurately and timely so all you have to do is kick back and relax - you're done!

For individuals and especially small businesses, ECL Consulting, LLC recommends finding a qualified tax preparer who truly cares about providing the best service, is knowledgeable and will locate all available deductions to reduce your tax and increase your refund. We are happy to recommend qualified and dedicated income tax preparers we work with. Please contact us to locate the best professional for your needs.

Ask An Expert

Question Mark Becomes Light Bulb
Q:  Am I eligible to contribute to a Roth IRA?

A:  Your income limits how much you can contribute to a Roth IRA: You must have compensation (e.g., wages, salary, tips, professional fees, bonuses).  These limits vary depending on your filing and marital statuses.  Generally, you can contribute to a Roth IRA if you have taxable compensation and your modified AGI for 2008 is less than:
  • $169,000 ($176,000 for 2009) for married filing jointly or qualifying widow(er),
  • $10,000 for married filing separately and you lived with your spouse at any time during the year (for both 2008 and 2009), and
  • $116,000 ($120,000 for 2009) for single, head of household, or married filing separately and you did not live with your spouse at any time during the year.

There is no age limitation for Roth IRA contributions.  If your only IRA is a Roth IRA, the maximum 2008 contribution limit is the lesser of your taxable compensation or $5,000 ($6,000 if 50 or older).  The same contribution amounts will hold in 2009.  The maximum contribution limit phases out depending on your modified adjusted gross income.

You can make contributions to a Roth IRA for your spouse provided you meet the income requirements.  Contributions to a Roth IRA can be made at any time during the year or by the due date of your return for that year (not including extensions).

Roth IRA contributions are not tax deductible and are not reported on your tax return.  On the other hand, you do not include in your gross income, and therefore are not taxed on, any qualified distributions or distributions that are a return of your regular Roth IRA contributions or that are rolled over into another Roth IRA.
