Greetings!

The new year always brings changes, and our federal and state governments have made some changes that small business owners need to be aware of.  Count on ECL Consulting's weekly newsletter to keep you up-to-date.
New for 2009: Mileage Rates

 Beginning on Jan. 1, 2009, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

  • 55 cents per mile for business miles driven
  • 24 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations
The new rates for business, medical and moving purposes are slightly lower than rates for the second half of 2008 that were raised by a special adjustment mid-year in response to a spike in gasoline prices. The rate for charitable purposes is set by law and is unchanged from 2008.
New for 2009: AZ Minimum Wage Rate Change

What is Arizona's minimum wage?
Effective January 1, 2009, Arizona's minimum wage is now $7.25 per hour. Every employer covered under the Act is required to pay each employee wages not less than this amount.

Arizona does not provide for a training or sub-minimum wage for different classes of employees (e.g. young workers, students, etc.). The minimum wage shall be paid for all hours worked, regardless of the frequency of payment and regardless of whether the wage is paid on an hourly, salaried, commissioned, piece rate, or any other basis.

Are there any exemptions under the Arizona Minimum Wage Act?
The Arizona Minimum Wage Act applies to any employee employed by an employer except the following:

· A person who is employed by a parent or a sibling;
· A person who is employed performing babysitting services in the employer's home on a casual basis;
· A person employed by the State of Arizona or the United States government; and
· A person employed in a small business grossing less than $500,000 in annual revenue, if that small business is not required to pay minimum wage under the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act. This exclusion for small businesses under the Arizona Minimum Wage Act is very limited.

Does the Arizona minimum wage apply to part-time or temporary employees?
Yes. The Arizona Minimum Wage Act does not make any distinction between whether an employee is full-time, part-time, or temporary.

Does the Arizona minimum wage apply to an independent contractor?
Except for the exemptions described above, the Arizona Minimum Wage Act applies only to the payment of wages to employees. It does not apply to independent contractors.
New for 2009: AZ Unemployment Tax Rate Changes

Each year the Arizona Dept. of Economic Security sends out new AZUI tax rates. These changes mean you may be paying more or less than the previous year, or that you may now be exempt from or subject to Arizona Job Training Tax.

These notices are usually mailed the first week in January.

QuickBooks Payroll
  • Update QuickBooks to reflect the new rate (or send us a copy of the new rate if you'd like assistance with this update).
Outsourced Payroll
  • Notify your payroll processing company of the change.
