| Dear Supporter,

Refugee Week is a national event, but it is - or should be - a particularly resonant one for the UK's Jewish community. The fantastic response to JCORE's Omer appeal - 69 kilos of rice, over 1060 nappies so far, and still counting - shows how concerned we rightly are about the plight of destitute asylum seekers. But we also need to demonstrate our concern to the government.
That's why I launched the No Way to Live charter at last month's Sussex Limmud, calling for an end to asylum destitution (see above). We've collected over 100 signatures so far, but we need hundreds more. Please sign the charter now if you haven't already, and ask your friends and family members to sign too. Let's make sure the Jewish voice on this issue is heard loud and clear.
We can't do it without you.

Executive Director |

Something for the little bump.
Don't miss: the Bubbulas Bump and Baby Fair at Avenue House, East End Road, Finchley N3 3QE on Sunday June 26 from 2-5pm.
Calling all mums and mums to be - come and enjoy a great afternoon out and help us raise funds to buy nappies for destitute asylum seeking mums.
There will be lots of exhibitors with products and services including maternity and nursery services from John Lewis, hand and foot print casting, baby gifts, activity classes, baby yoga and massage, clothing, jewellery, cards, reflexology, massage, paediatrician, baby first aid, food for new mums, active birthing, toddler music sessions and much more. There will be a great tombola, kosher café and breastfeeding area and you can make a day of it by spending some time in the beautiful Avenue House park.
Please bring with any spare nappies you have that can be given to destitute asylum seekers. Book online for £4 or £6 on the door.
In association with the Jewish Comunity Centre for London. |
The Nappy Challenge
Can you make a mountain out of a pile of nappies?
In conjunction with the baby fair, we are appealing to mums who have nappies they will never use again as they are too small or their little one is potty trained. If that is YOU, please consider dropping off the nappies at the baby fair at Avenue House on 26th June or contact Caroline to find a nearest drop off point. We also want to recruit nurseries, baby groups and schools to hold a nappy collection day so please send us any suggestions for who we could contact, or see if you can get your local group to sign up to holding a nappy collection. |

Latefa Guemar, Dr Gustav Born and Miqdam |
"I wasn't born an academic, I became one. I wasn't born a refugee, I became one."
At this joint Refugee Week event on June 2nd two refugee academics shared their experiences of making a new career in this country.
Latefa had fled Algeria with her journalist husband, who was due to be killed by Islamic fundamentalists, while Mikdam had faced persecution in Iraq for trying to promote human rights activities together with other academics. But even when safe in the UK, they faced major obstacles to rebuilding their lives. Latefa praised the support she received from the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA), while Mikdam found help at the Refugee Council. They were in conversation with Dr Gustav Born, son of Max Born, a CARA refugee to Britian in the 1930s and one of the few physicists who refused to work on the atomic bomb.
This event was held jointly with The Jewish Museum, The Jewish Community Centre for London and CARA. |
