| Dear Supporter,

Thank you to everyone who made our Omer appeal such a huge success - we're still counting the many bags of rice and nappies we collected for destitute asylum seekers. Alas, destitution is still the focus of our current work. At Limmud this month I'll be launching the next phase of our No Way to Live campaign (see below).
And next month's nappy challenge and baby fair aims to raise money to buy more nappies for destitute mothers. We urgently need volunteers to help with these events, so please spare some time if you can, or support us with a donation.
We can't do it without you.
Dr Edie Friedman,
Executive Director |

Staff News
We are extremely sad to be saying goodbye to JUMP Co-ordinator Laura Maxwell, who leaves us at the end of the month to take the post of Restorative Justice Coordinator with Common Ground, the East London mediation service. Laura is responsible for putting JUMP on its feet, so to speak, and has run the befriending scheme for the past two years, gaining national accreditation for training volunteers, and hard-won recognition from social services. She has also won the trust of some very vulnerable young people. We wish her the very best in her exciting new job. Also this month, we are delighted to welcome Ashleigh Applewhaite who has joined JCORE as an intern from Brunel University where she is studying for her masters.Ashleigh says: "I am undertaking my additional placement at JCORE in the hopes of having a mutual relationship where I can offer some youth work skills and JCORE can enlighten me on the voluntary sector. I presently do youth work for the London Borough of Hackney and I hope links can be formed that will last long into the future!
I will be working with JCORE on the Black, Asian and Jewish forum and I cannot wait!" |
Education News: Kindertransport Project UPDATE
| | Filming at Hasmonean High School |
The latest recording of oral history interviews took place last month at Hasmonean Boys' School in Hendon. Kindertransport refugees Ruth Barnett and Bernd Kochland were interviewed by a group of students from Year 10. It was especially poignant for Bernd who, as a 10 year-old refugee from Germany, was one of the first pupils at the school when it was started in 1944 by Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld.
The films will be part of the educational website to be launched this summer.

Bubbulas, Bump and Baby Fair
Sunday June 26th at Avenue House, Finchley, 2-5pm
Don't miss the event of the summer! We'll have lots of exhibitors, products and information, an interactive workshop space with taster sessions of things like baby yoga and massage, activities and classes, and a café area. There will also be an interactive community noticeboard, tombola, and goody bags if you get there early! Our 60% share of the funds raised will be used to buy nappies for destitute asylum seekers who simply can't afford them themselves . If you are pregnant, have a young baby or toddler, make sure you save the date. Or book online NOW and get a discount.
We urgently need a volunter NOW to ask businesses to donate kosher drinks and food for selling on in the café on the day. We know from past events we can raise significant funds this way.
We also need people ON THE DAY to steward and signpost, take entrance fees, help serve refreshments, man the tombola, collect nappy donations, and lots more. If you can spare just a few hours to make a big difference, please contact Caroline: 07956 351 633 or caroline@jcore.org.uk. in association with The Jewish Community Centre for London |
Desperately Seeking Nappies
We will be organising nappy donation days at local nurseries, schools, cheders, baby and toddler baby groups where we will ask for nappies to be brought in on a certain day. Please contact us if you can help in collecting nappies. And please let us know who to ask about holding a nappy donation day.
Appeal for size 28 clothes and size 7 shoes
A really lovely young girl is surviving here with just the clothes on her back and shoes on her feet. Despite being homeless and thankfully put up temporarily by a kind samaritan she has a smile and a positive outlook and is quite inspirational. We are having difficulty finding clothing to fit her so if you know any one who could donate size 28 summer clothing please contact caroline@jcore.org.uk urgently. |
Other events
Sunday 29th May - Sussex Limmud
Please join us for the launch of JCORE's No Way to Live charter - an appeal by all members of the Jewish community to allow asylum seekers the right to work after they have been in the UK for over six months. Some people wait up to ten years for a decision on their cases, subsisting on £5 a day at most. This one move would, at a stroke, remove destitution and restore human dignity.
Thursday 2nd June - The Home We Build Together A Refugee Week lecture. 7pm at the Jewish Museum in Camden Town.
In partnership with the Jewish Museum, the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics and the Jewish Community Centre for London.
Two refugee academics, Latefa Guemar from Algeria, and Mikdam from Iraq, will share their experiences, struggles and achievements in the UK. The event will be chaired by Dr Gustav Born, Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology at King's College and the son of a refugee from the 1930s.
Cost £10, which includes entry to the museum galleries.
