Dear Supporter,

 Edie Friedman

At the March for the Alternative rally in Hyde Park, I listened to an impassioned speech by Donna Covey, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council. She set out starkly how the cuts would affect services to refugees and asylum seekers - already the most disadvantaged people in our society.

It's bad news, and it makes the work of JCORE Support even more critical.  So this month, we're asking you to support our Omer appeal with donations or goods in kind.

Meanwhile, from all of us at JCORE, best wishes for a happy Passover - and do include our Pesach resources in your festivities.

Please take the time to read on, and help if you possibly can.  Thank you!

Project of the month - Omer Appeal 2011

Omer Appeal 2011The forty-nine days of the Omer, the period between Pesach and Shavuot, recall the time it took the Israelites to travel from Egypt to Mount Sinai. While they were refugees they survived mainly on manna.

Today, thousands of refugees to the UK survive on £5 a week or less.

To help meet some of their needs and restore their dignity, JCORE and West London Synagogue have launched an appeal for desperately needed rice and nappies to be collected during the days of Omer.

Please donate to the appeal, or contact Caroline to find out how to get your own synagogue, nursery, school or office involved.
Little Treasures - a lifeline continues

When Caroline Glasner (right) opened the doors in January 2009, she had no idea if anyone would turn up.  Two years later, the weekly drop-in for refugee and asylum-seeking mums and toddlers is thriving.  Nearly 20 mothers have registered so far, and the family of regulars enjoy learning through play, English lessons, friendship and support.

Caroline is now moving on from this project, but she's delighted to hand over to our partner organisation, Barnet Refugee Service. "It's so important to continue this lifeline for both mums and their children," she says.  "Special thanks are due to our volunteers Katja Goldberg and Annette Phillip, who have given their time, invaluable expertise, energy and enthusiasm and are much loved by the mums and little ones, and me!"

We're very proud of Caroline's achievement - another example of JCORE identifying a need, and meeting it.
Did you know?

In 2010, the UK was the sixth top country for receiving asylum seekers, with only 22,100 claims, the lowest level since 1989 and down 28% from 2009. Top of the list was the US (estimated 55,500 claims) and France (47,800), followed by Germany, Sweden and Canada - together accounting for more than half of all asylum applications. The largest refugee-producing countries were Serbia, China, Iraq and the Russian Federation, in that order.
