Dear Supporter,

Edie FriedmanWelcome back to the first edition of our newsletter, after a summer gap in which JCORE upped sticks and moved to brand new premises. You'll be able to see the new offices for yourself at our AGM in November - we look forward to welcoming you here then.

Meanwhile, we're embarking on phase two of our campaign against destitution among refused asylum seekers, with the help of our new intern (see below). The focus now is to win them the right to work. Watch this space to see how you can get involved!

Meet our new intern

Annalise"Hello! I'm Annalise, 21, and recently graduated in government from the London School of Economics. What's great about working at JCORE is that I get to do something practical towards those social goals I learned to appreciate in class.  I value what JCORE does because on my own campus I saw bubblings of tension between different faith communities. And I'm proud to work for a charity that strives to help asylum seekers and refugees when the mainstream press has largely turned against them.

So this summer I'm enjoying working on JCORE's destitution campaign and on raising awareness of the charity among young people."

We are also looking for additional interns in a range of areas. Internships looks great on your CV! Contact Neil for details of our current intern vacancies.
Little Treasures

Moms and totsJCORE Support co-ordinator Caroline reports: our mothers and toddlers group for asylum seekers has now been running for two terms. The children especially loved playing with water and decorating gingerbread men (right). This is what some of the mums said to us before we broke up for the holidays:

"I like come here - I had good time with my son, I learn so much English, I love come here and continue coming."

"I like to come here too much. Me and my children happy here and the teachers is very very nice."

"My children can play with the others and I can talk to the other mums. I learnt so much here."

We would like to say a massive thank you to our volunteers Louise Morris, Katya Goldberg and Sarvenaz Alai, all of whom give their time and energy to make the sessions so worthwhile to both mums and tots. We really appreciate you.

JUMP goes to the seaside

SAndcastleJUMP is our befriending scheme for young refugees who arrive in the UK without their families. Co-ordinator Laura says:

"At the end of July, a group of JUMP pairs - the young asylum seekers and their volunteer befrienders - went to Clacton-on-Sea with around forty young people from Barnet College who are learning English as a second language.

We had a fantastic day out together, paddling in the sea and riding on the dodgems. A big thank you to the Barnet students and teachers for inviting us!"

Recording refugee stories

Kindertransport (Wikipedia.com)JCORE Education Officer Talya is looking for people who came to Britain as refugees, either with the Kindertransport or since, to take part in our exciting oral history project with secondary schools this autumn.

We will train the young people and supervise them as they carry out the interviews. The audio and video recordings will be part of an educational website that will help other children learn about refugees.

If you're willing to tell your story or know another refugee who might like to, please contact Talya.
