Edie FriedmanRefugee Week - usually a cause for celebration - has been overshadowed by new threats to refugees.  Last week we heard that the biggest legal service for asylum seekers may be forced to close, and that the government plans to forcibly deport 12 Afghan boys aged under 18 each month. And there is also still no clear alternative plan for when child detention ends.

We are busy monitoring and campaigning on these issues. Meanwhile, the BNP have reared their heads again in Barking - they must not win this time, so please help if you can.

Refugee Doctors guide launch
We were very proud to launch the sixth edition of this guide, published by JCORE, at a prestigious lunch hosted by the Royal Society of Medicine last week. It all started when 100 refugee doctors turned up to a JCORE meeting 13 years ago.  Now it's an invaluable resource, adopted by the medical establishment, that has helped hundreds of refugee doctors.

JCORE writes to Minister of Justice about threat to RMJ

RMJJCORE has led a concerted Jewish response to the news that Refugee and Migrant Justice has gone into administration. They are the largest specialist provider of advice and representation to asylum seekers and other migrants. Closure leaves 10,000 people with inadequate or no legal help, leading to inevitable miscarriages of justice. We have expressed our concerns in a letter, co-signed by several rabbis, to Kenneth Clarke, Minister of Justice and Theresa May, the Home Secretary.

Action: The BNP rears its head again in Barking

Just when we thought the BNP was safely out of Barking and Dagenham, there's a chance that they might get a council seat after all. A Labour councillor has had to resign because she was working for the council as a lollipop lady during the election. The BNP's candidate is deputy leader Richard Barnbrook, friend of white supremacists, former Klansmen and neo-Nazis. The BNP are counting on a low turnout this time.

Pamper Evening

In a repeat of last year's hugely popular event, a haven of pampering went on last night in aid of JCORE's refugee mothers and toddlers group and the JCC's Darfuri women's mentoring project.  A team of beauty therapists had their hands full as people queued up for treatments and products, raising £1,500 to be split between the two projects.

Van, Phone and Piano!

Q. What is  the connection between these?
A. We need them all!

vanVan: Man with a van needed for 'JUMP'. JUMP matches up volunteer befrienders with a young person seeking sanctuary in the UK. This week, we need help moving a medium-sized fridge (160cm high) from one of our befrienders in Tufnell Park N19, to her befriendee: a young woman living in Hendon NW4.  The fridge would fit in an estate car but needs two people to carry up and down stairs (first floor both ends).  To help with this, or find out more about becoming a befriender yourself, email Laura.

PhonePhone: A volunteer to ring round synagogues about taking JCORE materials for their libraries.

All you need is a phone and some spare time during the week.
Please ring 020 8455 0896 or email.

Piano

Piano: A large room with grand piano
  - we're planning a fundraising concert and need somewhere suitable for a small chamber group to perform. We also need help with organising the event.
Please call or email if you can help.

 ...and thanks
to Rabbi Neil Janes and his congregation at North London Progressive Synagogue for their generous donation of baby goods to the New North London Synagogue drop-in for destitute asylum seekers.
