Leafletting in Dagenham

Dear Friends and Supporters,

A huge thank you to the many volunteers who turned out to help the Hope not hate campaign in Dagenham.  Not only did the BNP make no gains in the borough, it also lost all 12 council seats it had previously held.  The campaign was a great example of people from all walks of life coming together in common cause to say, these sort of politics have no place in our society.  It made all of us at JCORE proud to have been involved and we are planning to do more with Hope not hate in the very near future.

At the same time we will continue to try and redress the negativity around asylum and immigration issues that dominated the election. A promise to end child detention for immigration purposes is a tremendous start, but a fair and cohesive society must have at its heart a commitment to a fair asylum system.

We will scrutinize any new legislation and remind this government that justice and fairness also applies to refugees and immigrants .

LADY JAKOBOVITS

With the sudden death last week of Lady J, as she was widely known, JCORE has lost not only a patron but also a great friend.  She was a most extraordinary woman, a survivor of the Holocaust, whose capacity to be actively concerned for others knew no bounds.  Though she was utterly committed to orthodox Judaism, she was not confined by it: she was keen to join our Black Asian Jewish Forum and took great interest in what everyone was up to, attending meetings whenever she could.  She was a model for being true to who you are, but at the same time embracing and taking delight in the wider world.

We shall miss her greatly.
