Edie Friedman and Vivian Wineman, President of the Board of Deputies at the Sanctuary Pledge campaign launch

Edie Friedman and Vivian Wineman at Westminster

Why we urgently need your support
In the forthcoming elections, racist political groups stand a chance of making really significant gains.  This is a danger we cannot afford to ignore.  So, along with the Board of Deputies and other Jewish organisations, we are calling on all our supporters to get involved now.

What JCORE is doing
We are working with two national campaigns.

Hope Not Hate is challenging the BNP vote in seats around the UK.  In East London, they are focusing on Barking and Dagenham, where Nick Griffin, leader of the BNP, is standing as MP for Barking; and where the BNP may well gain control of the council - they already have 12 seats and are the second largest party.

The second is the Sanctuary Pledge which Vivian Wineman and I helped launch recently (see picture above). This asks you to get your prospective parliamentary candidate - at hustings or on your doorstep  - to sign up to a set of promises about asylum. They include safeguarding the right to sanctuary, campaigning responsibly on race and asylum, and helping to end child detention.

What you can do

Phone for hopephone1. Phone for Hope  -  join the online telephone canvassing campaign from home at no cost.  The aim is to identify non-BNP supporters in Barking and Dagenham so as to encourage them to vote. You'll get ten people to call and a script. It shouldn't take more than half an hour. Here are the instructions - there's even a video to show you how.  If you do this, please let us know by emailing us on: election@jcore.org.ukbus

Join the JCORE outing2. Join the JCORE outing to the Hope not Hate campaign office in Dagenham on Monday April 26. You will spend a couple of hours leafleting with a local volunteer, followed by a light lunch in the campaign office.

Chris's blog: posted 6pm Friday April 3

Phew. I've just put my feet up after a wet afternoon tramping round the Chadwell Heath ward of Barking and Dagenham, delivering Hope not Hate newsletters to some of the 4000 households there.  With me were Sam, the energetic local organiser, and Joe, a full-time volunteer since leaving university last autumn. Leafleting is just one part of a hugely impressive nationwide strategy, and after six months' grassroots campaigning they are seeing some positive results.  Working alongside this inspiring team has made me a lot more optimistic about the possibility of turning back the BNP tide. And a few ounces lighter...
 Chris is a JCORE volunteer.
