Dear Friends and Supporters,
It may have felt like a slow start to the year, but JCORE has been as busy as ever. After running three sessions at Limmud, we have just launched Little Treasures for asylum-seeking mothers and toddlers, and are deep in a national pre-election campaign on the right to sanctuary.
What we're asking you to do this month is to write an urgent letter to your MP about destitution - yes, it's getting even worse - and donate any warm adult coats you no longer need to the NNLS drop-in (see below for details of these and other volunteering opportunities).
And we're also offering you the chance to exhibit one of your own photographs in a London gallery. Find out more here.
Thank you in advance for helping to make a difference.

News - JCORE gets another grant
We've received £15,000 from City Bridge Trust to fund our new equality and diversity courses for Jewish and Black youth-group leaders. The course will be run in partnership with Barnet College. |
Urgent action on destitution
The Government is planning to reduce the already minimal levels of support for asylum seekers in 2010/11.
Please write to your MP, asking them to write to the Home Secretary to:
- express concern over the fact that the majority of asylum seekers are having to survive on £5 a day while their applications are being reviewed by the Home Office
- urge the Home Secretary to set asylum support rates for 2010/11 at at least 70% of Income Support and at no less than £45 a week for single adults.
If you write your own, please mention that you are a JCORE supporter or member. Click here for more information.

Opening the door to Little Treasures
Despite the snow, an enthusiastic team of volunteers turned up at West Hendon community centre last week to help Caroline run the first session of JCORE's new mothers and toddlers' group for asylum seekers. Little Treasures is our first partnership with Barnet Refugee Service.
Could you help by picking up occasional donations of toys from around North London and delivering to Finchley? Please email Caroline. |
Winter coat appeal
With your help, JCORE supports the NNLS drop-in for destitute asylum seekers. We provide basic necessities for the 150 visitors, and help co-ordinate around 130 volunteers each month. You can find out more about the drop-in from the report, which will now be regularly updated on our website.
For the next drop in on February 7, we're appealing for warm winter coats, jackets, fleeces, scarves, gloves and hats for adults, especially in large sizes.
Please label your bags clearly with gender and size, and call us on 020 8455 0896 or email us for delivery details. |

A hat-trick at Limmud
JCORE's three sessions at Limmud attracted over a hundred people. Edie chaired a discusson about the BNP with Rabbi Danny Rich and activist Weyman Bennet. The aim was to give a clearer understanding of the issues, and strengthen our commitment to work outside our own community.
Adele led a discussion on the film, Divided Camps, and a session on multiculturalism for 8-11 year-olds called British-Jewish Bingo. |

Adele Stowe-Lindner is leaving us to go on maternity leave. Since she arrived a year ago in the newly-created post of Deputy Director, Adele's contribution to JCORE has been absolutely invaluable. She's raised substantial funds for new and existing projects, managed the education programme single-handed, and used her organisational skills to hugely improve the way we work. We wish her all the best and look forward to welcoming her back this time next year.
Our interns have completed their time with us and done a fantastic job. We will soon be appointing an Education Officer and a Deputy Director (maternity cover) and inviting applications from new interns.
