Edie Friedman
Dear Friends and Supporters,

It's been another whirlwind month for JCORE. We held three more fundraising events, which raised nearly £17,000, and received a major award from the Heritage Lottery - yet another endorsement of our work by a national charity.

Today we're launching our Chanukah appeal - this year it's aimed at bringing a little light into the lives of the teenage refugees we befriend through JUMP.  A very little goes a long way, so please give whatever you can afford. And from all of us at JCORE, best wishes for a very happy Chanukah.

NEWS

The Heritage Lottery has given JCORE £47,000 for a Kindertransport trail in London.  For this exciting project, primary school-age Jewish children and those from other ethnic minorities will be trained to do oral history interviews with some of the 'Kinder', now in their 70s and 80s. Together the children will create a trail and produce an accompanying booklet.

Congratulations to Adele for securing this amazing funding.
We also received £1000 from Liberal Jewish Synagogue United Charities Fund towards our core funding. We would like to thank them for their continuing support.
JCORE Supporters' Network
Oona King and Vivian Wineman

We were inspired and entertained by former MP Oona King, who helped launch this network at a lunch on December 1. The event raised over £15,000 for JCORE, and spread the word to a relatively new audience about the importance of educating Jewish children to play their part in a positive multi-racial society.

The 40 guests included Vivian Wineman (pictured right with Oona King), president of the Board of Deputies, who introduced Edie by saying how much he admired JCORE's work.

3000 asylum-seeking children arrive in the UK on their own every year.  This time of year can be particularly hard for these young people, many of whom are living  isolated and alone. JUMP provides them with befriending and group activities, and with eight nights of Chanukah we've thought of eight ways you can help. Pamper evening
The perfect pamper

Our fundraising pamper evening was fantastic on several levels. We had a wonderful turn-out of over 80 women, who loved the treatments and the goody bags   It was great to see so many glowing faces, beautifully relaxed bodies and perfectly presented hands and feet.  And we raised £1024.70 to be split equally between JUMP (see below) and women at the NNLS drop-in for destitute asylum seekers.

skn logoWe would like to acknowledge the very generous contribution of Sk:n Clinics who donated the 70 goody bags, samples of their products and some special offers which are available at their local salon in East Finchley.

We would also like to thank Healing Hands Spa in Regents Park Road, N3 for their donation of the £10 off vouchers and selection of products.  If you didn't attend the evening but would like a voucher for £10 off your first spa treatment at Healing Hands or a variety of offers at Sk:n clinics, please contact Caroline.

Tales of an extravagant stranger

Last month Alyth Gardens Synagogue, together with JCORE, were treated to Yasmin Alibhai-Brown's one-woman show.  Her portrayal of growing up as an Asian in Idi Amin's Uganda left the audience moved and entertained. The evening raised £700 towards the JUMP project.

JCORE at the House of Commons

JCORE arranged for Rabbi Lee Wax to speak on behalf of JCORE at a meeting organised by Ken Livingstone to launch the One Society Many Cultures campaign. She said, "I'm here as a Jew, firstly representing the Jewish Council for Racial Equality. I'm also here as a Rabbi, and in a personal capacity as someone passionate about human rights and anti-racism. Judaism has at its very core social action. As a Jew I welcome this campaign, and pledge mine and my community's support for it."

JCORE would like to thank our interns Fern and Jonathan for their work for us over the past few months. If you would be interested in working for JCORE as an intern please email Adele for details.

Fern HowardFern Howard recently graduated from UCL with a Masters in Modern History, having specialised in the history of inter-ethnic relations between the Jewish community and other minority groups living in 20th century Britain.

Fern says "I am thrilled to be involved in JCORE's campaign work in the lead up to the New Year.  I am currently working on the launch of a new campaign to build Jewish support for the Sanctuary Pledge, a project led by Citizens for Sanctuary that seeks to protect the tradition of Britain as a safe haven for those seeking refuge".

Jonathan RivlinJonathan Rivlin recently completed a Masters in International Relations from Oxford Brookes University where he concentrated on Southern African Foreign Policy.

Jonathan says "Whilst interning at JCORE I have been striving to create a coherent strategy that will force race issues to the forefront of the political agenda in the form of a Pledge in the run up to the 2010 General Election. JCORE helped me to gain a valuable insight into the work done by race equality groups".
