Edie Friedman
Dear friends and supporters,

We started the new year with two important debates - on multiculturalism at the Labour party conference, and on the limits of free speech at our own AGM.

We're now looking ahead to a packed month of events in November - there's something for everyone, from theatre addicts to football fans. We particularly need your support for the theatre and comedy nights.

Please put the dates in your diary, and forward the details to all your friends, relations and colleagues.

And thank you for your continuing support - we wouldn't be here without you.

Agm09Free speech limited?

At our AGM on September 30, human rights expert Francesca Klug, Jo Glanville, Editor of Index on Censorship, and filmmaker Rex Bloomstein explored the limits of free speech in an impassioned debate that ranged from Holocaust denial to whether or not the BNP should appear on BBC's Question Time.

Chairing the debate, Edie said "We won't all agree, but it's important to air these complex questions so that JCORE can continue to provide a coherent Jewish voice on race and asylum issues, and to educate and campaign effectively."

JCORE at the Party ConferencesLabour conference

Edie joined a panel of trades unionists, politicians and other anti-fascist organisations at the Labour Party Conference last month to discuss the rise of the BNP and the increase in activities against Muslims and asylum seekers.

She emphasised how important it was for minority groups to act together - if we fail to do this we grant a victory to the extremists.

JCORE Support news
mother and babe
We have just won a grant from the Church Urban Fund for a weekly refugee mother-and-toddler group, in partnership with Barnet Refugee Service.

Caroline is looking for volunteers to help out at the group, and for donations of good-quality pre-school toys.

Please email her if you can help.

We are also very grateful to the Sobell Foundation for funding which will go towards JUMP over the next three years.
