JCORE runs a model workshop in Glasgow
On August Bank Holiday, Edie ran a high-profile workshop on racism and stereotyping for Glasgow Jewish Educational Forum and UJIA. Watched by sixty adults, Edie took a group of over fifty schoolchildren through a series of games and exercises, after which they quizzed Fergus Ewing, SMP on topics from political correctness to Holocaust education. "There's no place in Scotland for racism and antisemitism," he said, adding that JCORE workshops could be a model for citizenship education in Scotland.
The workshop inspired Rabbi Moshe Rubin of Giffnock and Newlands Synagogue to come on stage to urge the youngsters to mark Mitzvah Day on 15 November by asking supermarket shoppers to buy extra items for destitute asylum seekers. |

JUMP
These volunteer befrienders at the recent JUMP training course are clearly enjoying themselves as they learn about issues facing young asylum-seekers. We now have nine befriending pairs meeting every couple of weeks, and five more volunteers lined up for training in October, including a young mum whom we've matched up with a teenage mum.
Also during the summer we organised a trip to Arsenal stadium for group of young people from Phoenix Community Care. A big thank you to Samir Singh at Arsenal and our volunteer David Brin for allowing this to happen!

JCORE Support - A fantastic response
Thank you for your magnificent response to our appeal for sanitary towels for destitute asylum seekers. Cheques and online donations have been coming in all the time - £800 just over the summer. As well as individual contributions, one supporter raised £75 from her community; another got £50 in a whip-round among colleagues at the Metropolitan University. Thank you to everyone who contributed, and please keep going!
In July, Caroline launched an appeal for children's shoes. She struck gold with Brian's of Temple Fortune and Stanmore, who generously provided hundreds of pairs, worth thousands of pounds.
And a very Big Thank-you to Big Yellow, who gave us a year's free storage - worth £2500 - for all the goods we provide to destitute visitors to the monthly New North London synagogue drop-in.
You can still help with the sanitary towel appeal: Click here to find out what Caroline has to say. |
This month's campaign
Refused asylum seekers are currently denied the right to free secondary healthcare in England. We are currently lobbying Jewish peers to vote for a change in the law.
Please click here to read the letter and add your voice now to the campaign for asylum seekers to get free secondary health care. (a 'word' document will open).

We trained 100 youth leaders in race equality over the summer, in order to ensure that as many summer camps as possible this year were free from racism. |
