'You Will Not Fear...'

The front page of today's Wall Street Journal (June 9, 2010) featured a photo of an Army Sergeant comforting a fallen troop by reading the Bible to him. The incredibly powerful photo captures just one of many troops who carry and use a Bible while deployed. Military Ministry, and several other organizations make those "camouflage Bibles" available to troops in harm's way. In fact, since 9/11/2001, Military Ministry has distributed more than 2.2 million such Bibles to troops in theater and based in the US.

We do this knowing that faith makes a difference in the lives and experience of troops at war - in the heat of battle as well as before and after the fight.

Here are a just a few of the comments and thank you's returned to Military Ministry from the front lines:

Bibles Headed to the Gulf
"Thank you, thank you, and thank you! Thanks for your support in allowing us to directly and successfully contribute to the 'point of the spear' in support of military operations in the Gulf of Mexico. ALL of your supplies arrived safely last week in Louisiana. The materials are being spread out to various Command posts throughout the area. We continue to pray for all involved and that this environmental nightmare may soon be resolved."

Thanks to many donors, Military Ministry loaded a United States Coast Guard truck with 3,000 Rapid Deployment Kits (RDKs) and 2,016 compact Bibles headed to military operations in support of the oil spill disaster in the Gulf. These Bibles will bring the light of Jesus to the military from all branches (mostly National Guard) that are participating in the clean-up efforts. Read More...

A Lighthouse of Hope, Love and Faith
One church started a group where military wives study and share a meal.

Another congregation sends books and candy to a brigade of soldiers in Afghanistan.

More and more churches are finding ways to help our troops and their families cope with the stresses of war and military life. They stand as a lighthouse of hope, love and faith, drawing service members and their families to Christ.

"Service members and their families have different stresses than civilians," said Chaplain (COL) Ken Hegtvedt with Fort Lewis-based I Corps. "The bottom line is, how do you care for them and stay involved in their lives?"

'My Faith Was Nourished'

Soldier with Bible in ClassIt was the last Sunday before graduation from Army basic training at Ft. Jackson. This was their last Military Ministry discipleship class.

An NCO from one of the training companies quietly came forward and asked if he could say something. "On behalf of all of my Company, I want to thank you and tell you how much the Bible classes have meant to all the troops, how much we have learned, and how motivating and encouraging the classes have been spiritually to us." Then all 386 Soldiers, Drill Sergeants, NCOs, and their Chaplain stood and gave a standing ovation to Doug and Ev Harris, Military Ministry staff members who lead these classes each Sunday.
