While putting together my new presentation for my Sonora meetings next week, "Disease, It's Causes, Prevention, and Cure," I realized once again our world is suffering from the last-day pestilences prophesied by Jesus in Matthew 24.

  "Take heed that no man deceive you ... You shall hear of wars and rumors of wars ... For nation shall rise against nation ... and there shall be famines, and PESTILENCES, and EARTHQUAKES, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. 

     Certainly these signs are all around us. We are now facing a historical first in GLOBAL OBESITY. "There are currently 1.6 billion overweight adults in the world. That number is projected to grow by 40% over the next 10 years. (CDC) At least 300 million of them clinically obese - and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability. "National Geographic, Aug. 2004. 

     Data from the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet (released Jan. 26, 2011) reported the following: "New Cases: 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older in 2010." 28 Million Americans and children now suffer from the ravages of this leading cause of death and suffering.

     Did you know that America's Healthcare System is the Third Leading Cause of Death? The 2000 Journal of the American Medical Association article illuminates the failure of the U.S. medical system in providing decent medical care for Americans.  

    The author is Dr. Barbara Starfield of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and she desribes how the US health care system may contribute to poor health.

ALL THESE ARE DEATHS PER YEAR:

� 12,000 -- unnecessary surgery

�     7,000 -- medication errors in hospitals

� 20,000 -- other errors in hospitals

� 80,000 -- infections in hospitals

� 106,000 -- non-error, negative effects of drugs

   The total number of deaths per year from iatrogenic causes is to 225,000.

     What does the word iatrogenic mean? This term is defined as induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy. Used especially of a complication of treatment. Dr. Starfield offers several warnings in interpreting these numbers:

�   First, most of the data are derived from studies in hospitalized patients.

�   Second, these estimates are for deaths only and do not include negative effects that are associated with disability or discomfort.

�   Third, the estimates of death due to error are lower than those in the IOM report.

    If the higher estimates are used, the deaths due to iatrogenic causes would range from 230,000 to 284,000. In any case, 225,000 deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer. Even if these figures are overestimated, there is a wide margin between these numbers of deaths and the next leading cause of death (cerebrovascular disease). To make plain natural law, and urge the obedience of it, is the work that accompanies the third angel's message, to prepare a people for the coming of the Lord." CD 69.
