Greetings!
I want to share a true story about God's amazing grace that led me to salvation in Christ. It all started when Sophia Nahorney, one of my eighty-year-old employees at Lodi Health Food Store, handed me a book called "My Son Dan," written by the late Dan Collins. Dan at the time was an evangelist for Amazing Facts working with Joe Crews. My Son Dan was the story of a wild, red-headed young man who grew up racing fast cars and drinking lots of booze. Not only did we share the same name, but we also shared much of the same experience. Miraculously, the book was an eye-opener for me, and the Holy Spirit used it to prick my sinful heart and awaken my conscience to change my wayward lifestyle.
A few days after Sophia gave me the book, Dan walked into my health store and invited me to his revival meetings at the Fairmont Church. Being a Catholic since I was a baby, I had never attended a Protestant Church meeting in my life. However, I felt something supernatural was convicting me to attend Dan's meeting that evening. When I arrived, I found the church filled with people, so I snuck into a pew off to the side. I soon found myself engrossed in Dan's message calling sinners to the cross of Calvary and to Jesus as the only One who can take away the sins of the world. I was shocked when he paused for a minute and said, "Danny, I see you in the audience."
Dan eased my tension by not pointing me out to the crowd of 500 or more, but said that all of Lodi would know me soon enough. How could that be? I was new to Lodi and knew very few people in the city. Was something going to happen of which I was not aware? Was this some kind of prophecy?
I returned the next night to hear another call from Dan and the Holy Spirit for sinners to come to the foot of the cross. When Dan finished preaching, he gave an altar call for baptism and many convicted people responded to the call. I was strongly convicted myself to go forward, but hesitated because I wanted my wife to go with me. Kay, Dan's wife, saw me struggling and rushed over to where I was standing. "I want to be baptized," I told Kay. "I feel a strong conviction to leave my old life of sin and start afresh, but this is all new to me." I had never learned about Gos' amazing grace when I was young and attending Catholic Schools. In fact, I was doing lots of penance and trying to earn my way into heaven.
How excited I was to learn the following truth: "We did not seek after it [grace], but it was sent in search of us. God rejoices to bestow this grace upon every one who hungers for it." (God's Amazing Grace, p. 10). "His grace alone can quicken the lifeless faculties of the soul, and attract it to God, to holiness. ... When the heart yields to the influence of the Spirit of God the conscience will be quickened, and the sinner will discern something of the depth and sacredness of God's holy law, the foundation of His government in heaven and on earth. The 'Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world,' illumines the secret chambers of the soul, and the hidden things of darkness are made manifest. John 1:9. Conviction takes hold upon the mind and heart. The sinner has a sense of the righteousness of Jehovah and feels the terror of appearing, in his own guilt and uncleanness, before the Searcher of hearts. He sees the love of God, the beauty of holiness, the joy of purity; he longs to be cleansed and to be restored to communion with Heaven." Steps to Christ, p. 24. Friends, God grace was working to save me even before I was led to repentance. Now I began to understand the Scripture that says God's goodness grace leads us to repentance. (See Romans 2:4). At the revival meetings at Fairmont Church, Dan Collins was calling sinners to look to the Jesus uplifted on the cross of Calvary. The gospel message was stirring my soul because "Jesus had said, 'I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me.' John 12:32. Christ must be revealed to the sinner as the Saviour dying for the sins of the world; and as we behold the Lamb of God upon the cross of Calvary, the mystery of redemption begins to unfold to our minds and the goodness of God leads us to repentance. In dying for sinners, Christ manifested a love that is incomprehensible; and as the sinner beholds this love, it softens the heart, impresses the mind, and inspires contrition in the soul." Ibid., p. 26. Once the meeting ended, Kay took me to Dan, who was now talking to three other pastors, and told him that I wanted to be baptized. I will never forget his answer. "You are not ready, Danny," he said, "but I will baptize you and your wife together some day." Was this another prophecy? Dan's wisdom and experience told him that I was engrossed in the moment. He knew that in my heart I had not separated from my worldly ways and time proved he was he right! I soon learned that without the power of God, it is impossible to escape from the pit of sin. I must say that I was so ignorant of the gospel that I thought baptism by immersion was going to somehow cleanse me from my sins.
A few months later, I was right back to my old ways of drinking and partying. I had not learned in Catholic schools, which I attended for 12 years, that only God's grace could change me into a new creature. As I saw the righteous Son of God dying on the cross for Danny, the Holy Spirit quickened my mind and I understood that my sins had killed Him. I loathed my sins at that moment and repented. There were times that I nearly vomited as I recalled the sins of my past. As Dan continued preaching, my heart cried out for purity, and the washing I desired was only available through the blood of Jesus and His word. Baptism is the public declaration that I have found salvation in the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ. "Here is a point on which many may err, and hence they fail of receiving the help that Christ desires to give them. They think that they cannot come to Christ unless they first repent, and that repentance prepares for the forgiveness of their sins. It is true that repentance does precede the forgiveness of sins; for it is only the broken and contrite heart that will feel the need of a Saviour. But must the sinner wait till he has repented before he can come to Jesus? Is repentance to be made an obstacle between the sinner and the Saviour?
"The Bible does not teach that the sinner must repent before he can heed the invitation of Christ, 'Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.' Matthew 11:28. It is the virtue that goes forth from Christ, that leads to genuine repentance. Peter made the matter clear in his statement to the Israelites when he said, 'Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.' Acts 5:31. We can no more repent without the Spirit of Christ to awaken the conscience than we can be pardoned without Christ." Ibid., p. 26. "Christ is the source of every right impulse. He is the only one that can implant in the heart enmity against sin. Every desire for truth and purity, every conviction of our own sinfulness, is an evidence that His Spirit is moving upon our hearts." Ibid.
"Many are confused as to what constitutes the first steps in the work of salvation. Repentance is thought to be a work the sinner must do for himself in order that he may come to Christ. They think that the sinner must procure for himself a fitness in order to obtain the blessing of God's grace. But while it is true that repentance must precede forgiveness, for it is only the broken and contrite heart that is acceptable to God, yet the sinner cannot bring himself to repentance, or prepare himself to come to Christ. Except the sinner repent, he cannot be forgiven; but the question to be decided is as to whether repentance is the work of the sinner or the gift of Christ. Must the sinner wait until he is filled with remorse for his sin before he can come to Christ? The very first step to Christ is taken through the drawing of the Spirit of God; as man responds to this drawing, he advances toward Christ in order that he may repent. The sinner is represented as a lost sheep, and a lost sheep never returns to the fold unless he is sought after and brought back to the fold by the shepherd. No man of himself can repent, and make himself worthy of the blessing of justification. The Lord Jesus is constantly seeking to impress the sinner's mind and attract him to behold Himself, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sins of the world. We cannot take a step toward spiritual life save as Jesus draws and strengthens the soul, and leads us to experience that repentance which needeth not to be repented of.
"When before the high priests and Sadducees, Peter clearly presented the fact that repentance is the gift of God. Speaking of Christ, he said, 'Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins' (Acts 5:31). Repentance is no less the gift of God than are pardon and justification, and it cannot be experienced except as it is given to the soul by Christ. If we are drawn to Christ, it is through His power and virtue. The grace of contrition comes through Him, and from Him comes justification." Revival and Beyond, pp. 20, 21.
I praised the Lord because a year and a half after the meetings in Lodi, Dan Collins drove to Lodi to baptize my wife and I together at English Oaks Church in Lodi. Even though I returned to my sinful life a few weeks after Dan's meetings at Fairmont Church, the Holy Spirit never gave up on me, but continued to impress me of God's love and His amazing grace. He constantly sought me out and impressed my sinful mind of my need for the Saviour to heal me. Remember, Dan had said, "All of Lodi would know me soon enough," and, with the baptism, two of his prophecies about my life had come true. God's amazing grace had led me to the next steps to salvation--repentance and confession of my sins of the past--and to the power to walk in newness of life! God amazing "grace is sufficient for thee." 2 Cor. 12:9. Once I stayed up all night searching for the meaning of the word grace. I found the best definition in Strong's Concordance. It said grace is "the divine influence in the heart and its reflection in the life." In other words, grace is divine power. It is the "divine influence" or "power" to transform a sinner into a saint and save a soul from eternal death. "The leaven [God's grace] hidden in the flour works invisibly to bring the whole mass under its leavening process; so the leaven of truth works secretly, silently, steadily, to transform the soul. The natural inclinations are softened and subdued. New thoughts, new feelings, new motives, are implanted. A new standard of character is set up--the life of Christ. The mind is changed; the faculties are roused to action in new lines. Man is not endowed with new faculties, but the faculties he has are sanctified. The conscience is awakened. We are endowed with traits of character that enable us to do service for God." "Received into the heart, the leaven of truth [God's grace] will regulate the desires, purify the thoughts, and sweeten the disposition. It quickens the faculties of the mind and the energies of the soul. It enlarges the capacity for feeling, for loving. "The world regards as a mystery the man who is imbued with this principle. The selfish, money-loving man lives only to secure for himself the riches, honors, and pleasures of this world. He loses the eternal world from his reckoning. But with the follower of Christ these things will not be all-absorbing. For Christ's sake he will labor and deny self, that he may aid in the great work of saving souls who are without Christ and without hope in the world. Such a man the world cannot understand; for he is keeping in view eternal realities. The love of Christ with its redeeming power has come into the heart. This love masters every other motive, and raises its possessor above the corrupting influence of the world. "The countenance is changed. Christ abiding in the heart shines out in the faces of those who love Him and keep His commandments. Truth is written there. The sweet peace of heaven is revealed. There is expressed a habitual gentleness, a more than human love. {COL 102.2} "The leaven of truth [God's grace] works a change in the whole man, making the coarse refined, the rough gentle, the selfish generous. By it the impure are cleansed, washed in the blood of the Lamb. Through its life-giving power it brings all there is of mind and soul and strength into harmony with the divine life. Man with his human nature becomes a partaker of divinity. Christ is honored in excellence and perfection of character. As these changes are effected, angels break forth in rapturous song, and God and Christ rejoice over souls fashioned after the divine similitude." COL 98, 99, 101, 102. Now I better understand the words of Paul to the Romans: "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life." We are saved by God's amazing grace alone, through faith, which produces good works in us. We truly are saved "by His life." "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name." John 1:12
