I can see in the Lord's providence that the medical missionary work is to be a great entering wedge, whereby the diseased soul may be reached. ... Do medical missionary work. Thus you will gain access to the hearts of the people. The way will be prepared for more decided proclamation of the truth. You will find that relieving their physical suffering gives an opportunity to minister to their spiritual needs. {CME 7}
'All who believe and proclaim the truth should not only practice health reform, but teach it diligently to others.' This will be a strong agency in calling the attention of the unbelieving to consider that if we are intelligent upon this subject in regard to healthful diet and practices, we would be sound on the subjects of Bible doctrine. {CM 133}
The gospel of health has able advocates, but their work has been made very hard because so many ministers, presidents of conferences, and others in positions of influence, have failed to give the question of health reform its proper attention. They have not recognized it in its relation to the work of the message as the right arm of the body ... When properly conducted, the health work is an entering wedge, making a way for other truths to reach the heart. When the third angel's message is received in its fullness, health reform will be given its place in the councils of the Conference, in the work of the church, in the home, at the table, and in all the household arrangements. Then the right arm will serve and protect the body.{TSDF 144}
BEGIN
AT ONCE TO DO MEDICAL MISSIONARY WORK
The medical missionary work will open many doors. No one need wait until called to some distant field before beginning to help others. Wherever you are, you can begin at once. Opportunities are within the reach of everyone. Take up the work for which you are held responsible, the work that should be done in your home and in your neighborhood. Wait not for others to urge you to action. In the fear of God go forward without delay, bearing in mind your individual responsibility to Him who gave His life for you. Act as if you heard Christ calling upon you personally to do your utmost in His service. Look not to see who else is ready. If you are truly consecrated, God will, through your instrumentality, bring into the truth others whom He can use as channels to convey light to many that are groping in darkness. WM 119
The Lord will give you success in this work, for the gospel is the
power of God unto salvation, when it is interwoven with the practical life,
when it is lived and practiced. The union of Christlike work for the body and
Christlike work for the soul is the true interpretation of the gospel. {CME 7}
The evangelization of the world is the work that God has given to those who go forth in His name. They are to be colaborers with Christ, revealing to those ready to perish His tender, pitying love. God calls for thousands to work for Him, not by preaching to those who know the truth, going over and over the same ground, but by warning those who have never heard the last message of mercy. Work with a heart filled with an earnest longing for souls. Do medical missionary work. Thus you will gain access to the hearts of the people. The way will be prepared for more decided proclamation of the truth. You will find that relieving their physical suffering gives an opportunity to minister to their spiritual needs.
THE WORK WILL REVIVE THE CHURCH
Get
the young men and women in the churches to work. Combine medical
missionary
work with the proclamation of the third angel's message. Make regular,
organized efforts to lift the church members out of the dead level in
which
they have been for years. Send out into the churches workers who will
live the
principles of health reform. Let those be sent who can see the necessity
of
self-denial in appetite, or they will be a snare to the church. See if
the
breath of life will not then come into our churches. {MM 320}
GOSPEL
& MEDICAL MISSIONARY WORK MUST BLEND
No line is to be drawn between the genuine medical missionary work
and the gospel ministry. These two must blend. They are not to stand
apart as separate lines of work. They are to be joined in an inseparable union,
even as the hand is joined to the body. The medical missionary work is to be
to the work of the church as the right arm to the body. The third angel
goes forth proclaiming the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. The
medical missionary work is the gospel in practice. All lines of work are to be
harmoniously blended in giving the invitation: "Come; for all
things are now ready." {8T 77}
We should ever remember that the object of the medical missionary
work is to point sin-sick men and women to the Man of Calvary, who taketh away
the sin of the world. By beholding Him, they will be changed into His likeness.
We are to encourage the sick and suffering to look to Jesus and live. Let the
workers keep Christ, the Great Physician, constantly before those to whom
disease of the body and soul has brought discouragement. Point them to the One
who can heal both physical and spiritual disease. Tell them of the One who is
touched with the feeling of their infirmities. Encourage them to place
themselves in the care of Him who gave His life to make it possible for them to
have life eternal. Talk of His love; tell of His power to save. {CD 458}
WE
MUST PRACTICE WHAT WE PREACH
Shall we not rather do that medical missionary work which is the
gospel in practice, living in such a way that the peace of God can rule in our
hearts? Shall we not remove every stumbling block from the feet of unbelievers,
ever remembering what is due to a profession of Christianity? Far better give
up the name of Christian than make a profession and at the same time indulge
appetites which strengthen unholy passions. {CD 34}
God calls upon every church member to dedicate his life
unreservedly to the Lord's service. He calls for decided reformation. All
creation is groaning under the curse. God's people should place themselves
where they will grow in grace, being sanctified, body, soul, and spirit, by the
truth. When they break away from all health-destroying indulgences, they will
have a clearer perception of what constitutes true godliness. A wonderful
change will be seen in the religious experience.{Ibid}
Romans 12: 1, 2: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service. And be not conformed
to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may
prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." We are to prove or demonstrate the power of God in our lives by our obedience to His laws--both physical and moral.
CHURCH MEMBERS TO BE MEDICAL MISSIONARIES
We have come to a time when every member of the church should take
hold of medical missionary work. The world is a lazar house filled with victims
of both physical and spiritual disease. Everywhere people are perishing for
lack of a knowledge of the truths that have been committed to us. The members
of the church are in need of an awakening, that they may realize their responsibility
to impart these truths. Those who have been enlightened by the truth are to be
light bearers to the world. To hide our light at this time is to make a
terrible mistake. The message to God's people today is, "Arise, shine; for
thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee." {CD 455}
Our ministers should become intelligent upon this question. ... At
our large gatherings, instruction should be given upon health and temperance.
Seek to arouse the intellect and the conscience. Bring into service all the
talent at command, and follow up the work with publications upon the subject.
"Educate, educate, educate," is the message that has been impressed
upon me. {CD 451}
DISEASE, ITS CAUSES, PREVENTION, AND CURE
In Loma
Linda Messages, page 62, it says:
"The
truth for this time, the third angel's message, is to be proclaimed with a loud
voice as we approach the great final test. This test must come to the churches
in connection with true medical missionary work." We are told that in time
of trouble "there will be sick ones, plenty of them, that will need
help" so because of the need, but also "for their own sake, they
should, while they have opportunity, become intelligent in regard to disease,
its causes, prevention and cure, and those who will do this will find a
field of labor anywhere."
EXAMPLES
OF HEALTH & MEDICAL MISSIONARY WORK
I
am instructed to say to health reform educators, Go forward. The world needs
every jot of the influence you can exert to press back the tide of moral woe.
Let those who teach the third angel's message stand true to their colors. {CD 457}

COOKING
SCHOOLS
Every church should be a training school for Christian workers. Its members
should be taught how to give Bible readings, how to conduct and teach Sabbath
school classes, how best to help the poor and to care for the sick, how to work
for the unconverted. There should be schools of health, cooking schools, and
classes in various lines of Christian help work. There should not only be
teaching, but actual work under experienced instructors. Let the teachers lead
the way in working among the people and others, uniting with them, will learn
from their example. One example is worth more than many precepts. {CME 18}
VEGETARIAN
RESTAURANTS
It
was presented to me that we should not rest satisfied because we have a vegetarian
restaurant in Brooklyn, but that others should be established in other
sections of the city. The people living in one part of Greater New York do not
know what is going on in other parts of that great city. Men and women who eat
at the restaurants established in different places will become conscious of an
improvement in health. Their confidence once gained, they will be more ready to
accept God's special message of truth. {CD 276}
Wherever
medical missionary work is carried on in our large cities, cooking schools
should be held; and wherever a strong educational missionary work is in
progress, a hygienic restaurant of some sort should be established, which shall
give a practical illustration of the proper selection and the healthful
preparation of foods. {CD 276}
HEALTH
LECTURES IN RESTAURANTS:
The
Lord has a message for our cities, and this message we are to proclaim in our
camp meetings and by other public efforts, and also through our publications.
In addition to this, hygienic restaurants are to be established in the
cities, and by them the message of temperance is to be proclaimed. Arrangements
should be made to hold meetings in connection with our restaurants. Whenever
possible, let a room be provided where the patrons can be invited to
lectures on the science of health and Christian temperance, where they can
receive instruction on the preparation of wholesome food and on other important
subjects. In these meetings there should be prayer and singing and talks, not
only on health and temperance topics, but also on other appropriate Bible
subjects. As the people are taught how to preserve physical health, many
opportunities will be found to sow the seeds of the gospel of the
kingdom. {CD 276}
HEALTH
CLASSES
It
is the positive duty of God's people to go into the regions beyond. Let forces
be set at work to clear new ground, to establish new centers of influence
wherever an opening can be found. Rally workers who possess true missionary
zeal, and let them go forth to diffuse light and knowledge far and near. Let
them take the living principles of health reform into the communities that to a
large degree are ignorant of these principles. Let classes be formed,
and instruction be given regarding the treatment of disease. {CD
456}
HEALTH
TRACTS AND BOOKLETS
There
should be more earnest efforts made to enlighten the people upon the great subject
of health reform. Tracts of four, eight, twelve, sixteen, and more pages,
containing pointed, well-written articles on this great question, should be
scattered like the leaves of autumn. {CD 461, 462}
CANVASSERS
TAUGHT SIMPLE REMEDIES
Canvassers should be able to give instruction in regard to the treatment of
the sick. They should learn the simple methods of hygienic treatment.
Thus they may work as medical missionaries, ministering to the souls and the
bodies of the suffering. This work should now be going forward in all parts of
the world. Thus multitudes might be blessed by the prayers and instruction of
God's servants. {CM 89}
