A Vegetarian diet is more healthful than the average American diet, particularly
in preventing, treating or reversing heart disease and reducing the risk of
cancer. A low-fat vegetarian diet is the single most effective way to stop the
progression of coronary artery disease or prevent it entirely. Cardiovascular
disease kills 1 million Americans annually and is the leading cause of death in
the United States. But the mortality rate for cardiovascular disease is lower in
vegetarians than in nonvegetarians, says Joel Fuhrman, MD, author
of Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Formula for Fast and
Sustained Weight Loss. A vegetarian diet is inherently
healthful because vegetarians consume no animal fat and less cholesterol and
instead consume more fiber and more antioxidant-rich produce--another great
reason to listen to Mom and eat your veggies! The standard American diet--high in saturated fats and processed foods
and low in plant-based foods and complex carbohydrates is making us fat and
killing us slowly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) and a division of the CDC, the National Center for Health Statistics, 64
percent of adults and 15 percent of children aged 6 to 19 are overweight and are
at risk of weight-related ailments including heart disease, stroke and diabetes. A study conducted from 1986 to 1992 by Dean Ornish, MD, president and director
of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, found
that overweight people who followed a low-fat, vegetarian diet lost an average
of 24 pounds in the first year and kept off that weight 5 years later. They lost
the weight without counting calories or carbs and without measuring portions or
feeling hungry. If you switch from the standard American diet to a vegetarian diet, you can add
about 13 healthy years to your life, says Michael F. Roizen, MD, author
of The RealAge Diet: Make Yourself Younger with What You. People who consume saturated, four-legged fat have a shorter life
span and more disability at the end of their lives. Animal products clog your
arteries, zap your energy and slow down your immune system. Meat eaters also experience accelerated cognitive
and sexual dysfunction at a younger age. Residents of Okinawa, Japan, have the longest
life expectancy of any Japanese and likely the longest life expectancy of anyone
in the world, according to a 30-year study of more than 600 Okinawan
centenarians. Their secret: a low-calorie diet of unrefined complex
carbohydrates, fiber-rich fruits and vegetables. The CDC reports that food-borne illnesses of all kinds account for 76 million
illnesses a year, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths in the
United States. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), foods
rich in protein such as meat, poultry, fish and seafood are frequently involved
in food-borne illness outbreaks.
Many foods
contain nutrients beneficial to perimenopausal and menopausal women.
Certain foods are rich in phytoestrogens, the plant-based chemical
compounds
that mimic the behavior of estrogen. Since phytoestrogens can increase
and
decrease estrogen and progesterone levels, maintaining a balance of them
in your
diet helps ensure a more comfortable passage through menopause. Soy is
by far
the most abundant natural source of phytoestrogens, but these compounds
also can
be found in hundreds of other foods such as
apples, beets,
cherries, dates, garlic, olives, plums, raspberries, squash and yams.
Because
menopause is also associated with weight gain and a slowed metabolism, a
low-fat, high-fiber vegetarian diet can help ward off extra pounds. Eating a lot of vegetables necessarily means consuming more fiber, which pushes
waste out of the body. Meat contains no fiber. People who eat lower on the food
chain tend to have fewer instances of constipation, hemorrhoids and
diverticulitis. Some people become vegetarians after realizing the devastation that the meat
industry is having on the environment. According to the US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), chemical and animal waste runoff from factory farms is
responsible for more than 173,000 miles of polluted rivers and streams. Runoff
from farmlands is one of the greatest threats to water quality today.
Agricultural activities that cause pollution include confined animal facilities,
plowing, pesticide spraying, irrigation, fertilizing and harvesting. Many vegetarians give up meat because of their concern for animals. Ten billion
animals are slaughtered for human consumption each year. And, unlike the farms
of yesteryear where animals roamed freely, today most animals are factory
farmed-crammed into cages where they can barely move and fed a diet tainted
with pesticides and antibiotics. These animals spend their entire lives in
crates or stalls so small that they can't even turn around. Farmed animals are
not protected from cruelty under the law-in fact, the majority of state
anti-cruelty laws specifically exempt farm animals from basic humane
protection. Disease-fighting phytochemicals give fruits and vegetables their rich, varied
hues. They come in two main classes: carotene and anthocyanins. All rich
yellow and orange fruits and vegetables-carrots, oranges, sweet potatoes,
mangoes, pumpkins, corn, owe their color to carotenoids. Leafy green vegetables
also are rich in carotenoids but get their green color from chlorophyll. Red,
blue and purple fruits and vegetables-plums, cherries, red bell peppers-contain
anthocyanins. Cooking by color is a good way to ensure you are eating a
variety of naturally occurring substances that boost immunity and prevent a
range of illnesses.

DANIEL THE PROPHET REFUSED THE KING'S MEAT AND WINE?
Greetings!
The Bible contains many references to healthful living. In fact, you can find God's 8 laws of health in the first chapters on Genesis. Today I want to share a old health lesson from the Bible that many of you might be familiar with, but my support will come from new research and information. Daniel Chapter 1 is one of the most famous health lessons in Scripture, and you cannot find a clearer argument to abstain from meat and alcohol. Daniel the Prophet refused to defile his body with the King's meat and wine, and, instead, chose a diet of organic produce and pure water.
If we analyze a meat-based diet vs. a whole plant food diet, we learn that all animal foods contain cholesterol--a waxy steroid metabolite
found in the cell membrane and transported in the blood plasma of all animals, that causes heart disease. I remember the radio interview I did with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn on Healthline, and the
groundbreaking results of his 20-year nutritional study--the longest
study of its kind ever conducted, with irrefutable
scientific evidence, how we can end the heart disease epidemic in this
country forever by changing what we eat. Dr. Esselstyn said: "After 5 years on a plant-based diet, the average total cholesterol levels of
the research group dropped from 246 milligrams per deciliter to 137
mg/dL (Above 240 mg/dL is considered 'high risk," below 150 mg/dL is the
total cholesterol level seen in cultures where heart disease is
essentially nonexistent.) This is the most profound drop in cholesterol
ever documented in the medical literature in a study of this type." The 17 patients in
the study had 49 cardiac events in the years leading up to the study,
and had undergone aggressive treatment procedures. Several had multiple
bypass operations. After beginning the eating plan, there were no more
cardiac events in the group within a 12-year period. Angiograms taken of the participants in the study show a
widening of the coronary arteries, and thus a reversal of the disease. Heart disease is the #1 killer in America and a animal-based high fat diet is the major contributor. Daniel the Prophet made a wise choice not to eat the King's meat in Babylon years ago, and in 2008, we have other issues that convince us to avoid animal flesh. Consider that the USDA "ordered the largest meat recall in history--143 million pounds of beef, a California meatpacker's entire production for the past two years--because the company did not prevent ailing animals from entering the U.S. food supply, officials said. About 37 million lbs. of the meat--cuts, ground beef and prepared products such as meatballs and burrito filling--went to school lunch and other public nutrition programs, and almost all of this product is likely to be contaminated." The Washington Post, Feb. 18, 2009. In this day and age, we face the dangers of not only cholesterol, but contaminated meat including possible mad cow disease, or Bovine Spongiform Encepholopathy (BSE). BSE is a progressive neurological disorder of cattle which can be transmitted to other species, including humans as seen in Britain. Mad cow disease causes an excitable or nervous temperament in the animals and the disease is 100% fatal. In humans the disease is called Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease
(CJD). Death certificates have been sent to me that say CJD was the cause of death. Mad cow disease may be hidden under other brain-wasting disease names like Alzheimer's Disease. CJD causes memory loss, emotional instability including inappropriate outbursts, an unsteady gait, weakness, progressive dementia and death. I remember the headlines in a Seattle newspaper that read: "Mad Cow Disease in Washington." I said to myself, I am so glad I have not eaten beef in 25 years and my children have never eaten it in their lives."
I spoke to Howard Lyman this week, the Mad Cowboy who was sued along with Oprah Winfrey by the Cattleman's Association years back. He told me that almost no cattle are being tested for Mad Cow in this country, and the industry is making money. He said: "With the recession, they do not need any negative publicity to turn things around. It is all about money. The worst is yet to come." Another reason I admire the decision Daniel made in Babylon to abstain from animal flesh is because animal protein causes cancer to grow. Dr. T. Colin Campbell in The China Study said dairy protein can cause tumors to grow. That is why the Gerson Therapy and many other alternative clinics prohibits the use of animal food when treating cancer patients. Animal protein and animal fat increases cancer and feed tumors. With the routine use of hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and chemicals, and saturated fat, why would anyone want to eat beef and chicken anyway? In a special Consumer Reports investigation, January 2007, the popular magazine reported the following: "If you eat undercooked or mishandled chicken, our new tests indicate, you have a good chance of feeling miserable. CR's analysis of fresh, whole broilers bought nationwide revealed that 83% harbored campylobacter or salmonella, the leading bacterial causes of foodborne disease. Moreover, most of the bacteria we tested from all types of contaminated chicken showed resistance to one or more antibiotics, including some fed to chickens to speed their growth and prescribed to humans to treat infections." That means humans can get antibiotic-resistant bacteria from eating chicken. Daniel the Prophet, who was a very bright man and received wisdom from God, also chose pure water instead of alcohol to drink. The Bible says: "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." "Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright (fermented). At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, ... and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again. How many times I got drunk in bars where I would try to pick up "strange women". The guys and I would "utter perverse things" and tell dirty jokes and laugh. Even though I was "stricken" with a hangover and got in many fights while drunk, "I would seek it yet again." "Drinking just a small glass of wine a day can more
than double the risk of cancer, a study claims. It says that consuming just one 125ml glass of wine
increases the chance of developing mouth and throat cancer by 168 per
cent. Other cancers are also more
likely to strike regular drinkers," reported France's National Cancer
Institute (INCA).
The findings go against previous research, which has
found that the antioxidants in red wine can actually reduce the risk of
cancer. The INCA study warned: "The
consumption of alcohol is associated with an increase in the risk of
cancers -- mouth, larynx, esophagus, colon-rectum, and breast cancer. The cause is above all the transformation of
ethanol in alcohol to acetaldehyde, which damages DNA in healthy cells.
This is particularly likely to happen if
alcohol is introduced into the body daily -- even in small measures added. Small daily doses of alcohol are the most harmful.
There is no amount, however small, which is good for you." World News, Feb. 19, 2010. Alcohol is a drug and causes many untimely deaths. It destroys brain and liver cells and can lead to pancreatitis. Untold families have been ruined by the ravaging effects of alcohol, and drunk drivers have killed many people while intoxicated.
Pure water, on the other hand, is the liquid God gave us to drink. Water is an essential nutrient. All chemical reactions in the body
depend upon it. It transports nutrient in the blood to reach the cells. Minor dehydration--not enough to kill--is both the result and the hidden
cause of
many illnesses. The inverse is also true. Good hydration is
at the
foundation of good health. In many cases, fatigue, headaches, back pain and muscle spasms may be
caused by dehydration. I If you or your children complain of
frequent headaches, the amount of water you're drinking could be
responsible. Water will keep the toxins flushed out and help you to cool off through
perspiration. If you suffer from an afternoon nod
off, try
drinking more water an hour after lunch. Drinking water can prevent and treat depression: Hydration helps the body naturally replenish its supply of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Drinking water helps prevent and treat sleep disorders because hydration is needed for the production of nature's sleep regulator, melatonin. Water generates electrical and magnetic energy in every body cell, providing a natural power boost. Drinking water can prevent and treat ADD because a well-hydrated brain is continually energized to imprint new information in its memory banks. Thirst is a sign that the body is already dehydrated; so don't wait until you feel the urge--keep drinking water throughout the day. Eight or so glasses of water a day will flush
toxins from the kidneys and cleanse the urinary tract. Consuming adequate amounts of water each day can help to maintain good health and a strong immune system to help in your battle against cancer. I think we can benefit from the ancient advice given by Daniel the Prophet by abstaining from animal foods and consuming more pure water, just like he did. How important it is to understand fruits, vegetables, and water are cleansers and healers. They nourish and rejuvenate the cells.
