Why temperance?

 Dear Friends:
 
    Have you ever looked up the verses in the Bible that speak of temperance? Let us take a few minutes and study one of them: "And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee." Acts 24:25.
     Here Paul was being falsely accused by the Roman procurator, Tertullus, of being "a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes....And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. It was here that Paul witnesses to Felix that "righteousness and temperance" will be considered in the "judgment." Have you ever thought of that? The Bible says: "So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty." James 2:12. 
     Friends, we will not be saved by our works or by our own righteousness, but we will be judged by God's law. "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." Eccl. 12:13, 14. Another verse that I love is the promise in Revelation 22:14: "
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."
     Do you think that God will hold us accountable in the judgment for how we took care of our bodies? I do not believe that God's grace is a license to sin or to violate his laws spiritually or physically. God's grace does not mean I can commit adultery or eat pigs and crabs. I don't believe His grace is a license to kill or to smoke cigarettes and slowly kill my body temple in which He wants to live, and move, and have His being." Acts 17:28. After all, the same apostle who witnessed about temperance which means to abstain entirely from things that are harmful to the body also said: "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Cor. 6:19, 20!  Earlier in the chapter he was more pointed and said: "If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." 1 Cor. 3:17.
     Too many people living today, who are causing their own chronic diseases by eating and drinking like there is no tomorrow of the foods God forbade, believe that God will save them in their sins. That is not the gospel message I read. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we can "Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul." 1 Pet. 2:11.
    Here is a statement I read years ago that really made me think about intemperance: " Some think they may surely find happiness in a course of indulgence in sinful pleasures or in deceptive worldly attractions. And some sacrifice physical and moral obligations, thinking to find happiness, and they lose both soul and body. Others will seek their happiness in the indulgence of an unnatural appetite, and consider the indulgence of taste more desirable than health and life. Many suffer themselves to be enchained by sensual passions, and will sacrifice physical strength, intellect, and moral powers to the gratification of lust. They will bring themselves to untimely graves, and in the judgment will be charged with self-murder." MLT 162.
     I do not think that I have to tell you that self murder is a kind of suicide. The then-Surgeon General of the United States, C. Everett Koop in his 712-page report in 1987 said: Of the 2.5 million American who die each year, 1.5 are dying from diet related diseases." In other words, we have caused our own diseases. But, isn't it true, that many Americans would rather die young and kill themselves by their intemperate eating and drinking than sacrifice their debased appetites and live a longer, drug-free, healthy life? No wonder Paul wrote these two verses: "The enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things" and "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." Phil. 3:18, 19; 1 Cor: 10:31.
     The Old Testament had plenty to say about intemperance. The diet of Daniel is a beautiful illustration of a temperate diet. He refused the king's meat and drink and chose only plant foods and pure water to drink. He knew that "wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." Yet today many in my own church drink wine. They ignore the plain teachings on the subject in the Bible and set up their own standards. Will God be mocked? I do not think so!
     "On every side Satan seeks to entice the youth into the path of perdition; and if he can once get their feet set in the way, he hurries them on in their downward course, leading them from one dissipation to another, until his victims lose their tenderness of conscience and have no more the fear of God before their eyes. They exercise less and less self-restraint. They become addicted to the use of wine and alcohol, tobacco... and go from one stage of debasement to another. They are slaves to appetite. Counsel which they once respected, they learn to despise. They put on swaggering airs and boast of liberty when they are the servants of corruption. They mean by liberty that they are slaves to selfishness, debased appetite, and licentiousness.
     "The indulgence of fleshly lusts wars against the soul. The apostle [Paul] in the most impressive manner, addresses Christians, 'I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God' (Romans 12:1). If the body is saturated with liquor and the defilement of tobacco, it is not holy and acceptable to God. Satan knows that it cannot be, and for this reason he brings his temptations to bear upon men upon the point of appetite, that he may bring them into bondage to this propensity and thus work their ruin.
     "If men and women of intelligence have their moral powers benumbed through intemperance of any kind, they are, in many of their habits, elevated but little above the heathen." 1 MCP 76.
     In conclusion, I challenge you to read the other verses in the Bible that deal with temperance in the New Testament and study them. Temperance is a Bible doctrine and part of the sanctification process. Here are the verses: 1 Corinthians
9:25 -- It is necessary when striving for the mastery; Titus 2:2 -- It is part of sound doctrine; Galatians 5:23 -- It is one of the fruits of the Spirit; 2 Peter 1:6 -- It is one of the character virtues in the "Ladder of Sanctification."
    May God bless you with victory over appetite and total abstinence from those things that slowly kill us. Remember these two statements: "The controlling power of appetite will prove the ruin of thousands, when, if they had conquered on this point, they would have had moral power to gain the victory over every other temptation of Satan. But those who are slaves to appetite will fail in perfecting Christian character. The continual transgression of man for six thousand years has brought sickness, pain, and death as its fruits. And as we near the close of time, Satan's temptation to indulge appetite will be more powerful and more difficult to overcome" and "Satan is constantly on the alert to bring the race fully under his control. His strongest hold on man is through the appetite, and this he seeks to stimulate in every possible way. Counsels on Diet and Foods, pp. 59, 150. Oh, I just thought of one more: "It is as truly a sin to violate the laws of our being as it is to break the ten commandments. To do either is to break God's laws. Those who transgress the law of God in their physical organism, will be inclined to violate the law of God spoken from Sinai." Ibid, p. 17. 
 
     Remember, I am not a doctor and cannot prescribe. But I can share what I do for myself or what my children do for themselves.
    Consult your physician before using any of these remedies and watch him laugh, or better yet, the Master Physician "Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." Ps.103:3

H1N1 - Another Transmittal Disease?
Greetings!

     Can you imagine eating pigs?  When I was a child, every week I would go with my mother to the butcher shop and drool over all that meat. The owner would routinely give me a raw wiener to keep me happy while my mother ordered her usual order of jack cheese, round steak, a whole salami (I used to like to eat the white skin too), a huge chunk of bologna, blood sausage, pork chops, pork roast, bacon, ham, and more.
       I used to eat pounds pork and especially loved my mother's ham and potato salad. I would fry the salami until it was a crisp black and the kitchen would be filled with smoke. I knew nothing of the word carcinogenic.
      Since I was raised Catholic, I was never taught that God had given dietary laws to the Israelites to keep them healthy, and to prevent the diseases that plagued meat eater's, like the Egyptians. The Bible says: "Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. ... And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you." Leviticus 11:2, 7, 8.  
      Some of you might think the Old Testament dietary laws are null and void today, because we are living in the New Testament era. But let me assure you that nothing changed in the anatomy of the pig at the cross, when Jesus died for our sins, that I am aware of. As if a dead pig's flesh and body parts suddenly became health food. The "other white meat" is as unclean today as it was 2000 years ago. Pork, swine, pig, or hog was never intended to enter the mouths of God's people or to grace their tables. And please don't quote 1 Timothy 4:1-4, because swine's flesh is not sanctified by the word of God. So praying over your pig before eating it will not protect you from the cholesterol, the toxins, and the parasites (trichina worms). You are eating second-hand filth!
      Why did God forbid His people from eating the "unclean" animals like swine? I believe the main reason was for sanitary purposes. These creatures are scavengers and feed on the waste and filth of the earth, whether in the waters or on the land. Take the pig for instance. The animal is truly a scavenger and it will eat just about anything-from garbage to rattlesnakes. I have read that the pig doesn't sweat and tends to be frequently infested with the trichina worm. The trichina worm has the ability, science has discovered, to cross the blood-brain barrier. If it does and gets in your brain, the symptoms can be similar to that of a brain tumor. Misdiagnoses of a brain tumor rather than a trichina parasite have been reported. One of my own employees was having headaches and a brain scan taken at U.C. Davis Medical Center. The scan which was done to rule out a tumor actually revealed two worms in her brain. Yuck! Now think for a minute-have you ever been told to cook pork well? For what reason? The answer is to kill the trichina worms. Well, who wants to eat dead ones?
       Years ago in an issue of Health and Life, there appeared an article by T. C. Desmond-chairman of the Trichinosis Commission of New York. The article was entitled, "One in Six is Infected with Deadly Pork Parasite." In the article Desmond stated, "One out of twenty-five pork products purchased over the retail counter was found by the Pig Commission to contain parasites. It has been estimated that our present hog crop may provide us with 60,000,000 trichinae-infested meals. Another article stated: "The worms enter the human digestive tract as tiny, almost invisible cysts which digest and release the worms, so that they burrow through the walls of the stomach or duodenum to the bloodstream. The result is symptoms similar to food poisoning if the number of parasites is sufficient. Later may come rheumatic-like heart pain because of worms settling temporarily in the heart. Inflammation in the cardiac region may follow. In some cases the brain or nervous system may be disturbed. as though worms had invaded the brain or nerves, which possibly they do. Even invasions of the muscles may be fatal if the worms are numerous enough." Illinois Health Messenger.
        A friend of mine who worked at a meat packing plant once told me that he would get infections in his finger followed by a red line was running up his arm just from handling bacon and ham. He also said, "On one occasion, hams were turning green and I was ordered to smoke them and package them for sale back East." He continued, "Another time the bacon was outdated and I was told to repackage the bacon and stamp a new date on the package and resell it." How gross and deceptive! Is it any wonder why the Lord said, "And the swine, ... he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you." (Lev. 11:7,8).
       If you carefully examine the front foot of the pig, you will find a small abrasion. If you then press the pig's leg just above the abrasion, you will squeeze out a teaspoon of filthy matter. Some have called it "pork gravy." It is actually an outlet or drain for the dirty filth of which the pig's lymph system is filled. If you then carefully examine this filthy scrofulous serum, you will find that it contains many diseases, bacteria and viruses. Pickled pig's feet anyone?
      God commanded us not to eat, or even touch, the dead animal, because pigs are high in fat, cholesterol, deadly diseases, and trichina worms! Yet me touch the bologna, salami, pepperoni, and sausage every time you eat it. Even with all the bad publicity about pork and the health dangers of eating the pig, the devil smiles as Americans feast on their dead bodies from head to toe. The pigs head is turned into head cheese (ears and tails inserted), his stomach is transformed into tripe, his intestines are used for sausage covers, his heart, liver, and kidneys are eaten, and his feet are pickled. Even his bristles are used in brushes and his skin for wallets and purses. In the end, men and women "squeal and grunt" from the pain caused from their perverted appetites and for eating what God said not to!
      No wonder there is an end-time prophecy given by the prophet Isaiah in regards to the coming of the Lord that warns: "For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many. They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination [sea creatures that do not have fins and scales like crabs, shrimp, oysters, lobsters and shark--scavengers of the sea], ... shall be consumed together, saith the LORD." Isa. 66:16, 17. I wouldn't want to be eating a pork hot dog when the Lord comes. In fact, would someone pass me a bottle of Paratox please!
       Furthermore, in Good Medicine, Vol. XVII, No. 3, it says: "In late 2007, the verdict came in. The American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund released the most comprehensive review ever compiled on nutrition  and cancer risk. Many foods are linked to cancer, the report confirmed. But it reserved some of its strongest language for them link between processed meats, like hot dogs and bacon, and colorectal cancer. The evidence was deemed 'convincing,' and no amount was considered safe. ... This included ham, bacon, pastrami, and salami, as well as hot dogs and sausages to which nitrites and nitrates have been added."
      Now we are waiting and watching to see if the swine flu, which has infected more Americans (over 3,000) than Mexicans, will become a pandemic. There is also concern that it may mutate and become more deadly, since, at present, very few have died from H1N1. Now the president says we should not call it Swine Flu, but H1N1. I am sure all the publicity has hurt the pork business and we don't want to do that, right?
      There are many theories circulating on how H1N1 originated. I have commented on a couple, but today I want to propose another highly plausible theory; that people may be getting swine's flu from eating, touching, or breathing the air from the waste at hog farms. Could the virus be transmittal through the ingestion pathway? The authorities "assure" that it can't. It reminds me of when mad cow disease was exposed in Britain and the news reported: "You cannot get mad cow from eating cows and burgers; there is nothing to worry about." Well, that proved to be false, as we all have learned. Bacteria and viruses like listeria, salmonella, campylobacter, and tuberculosis are transmittal diseases. I remember the headlines of the local paper years ago: "Cow AIDS no threat to humans." Would you eat a hamburger made from the dead parts of a cow that had Aids? Well, who is checking the pigs to see if they have H1N1 before you bite into that disgusting piece of bacon? Remember, Satan wants to "steal, and to kill, and to destroy" you!" John 10:10. 
       Years ago I read a prophetic statement written in 1905 that said: "Those who use flesh foods little know what they are eating. Often if they could see the animals when living and know the quality of the meat they eat, they would turn from it with loathing. People are continually eating flesh that is filled with tuberculosis and cancerous germs. Tuberculosis, cancer, and other fatal diseases are thus communicated [transmitted and spread from animal to humans."  Counsels on Diet and Foods, 388.
       Do you remember the Fishteria outbreak that happening years ago when tons of fish were dying in Lake  Erie? That same year, I was flying to a speaking appointment in another state and happened to sit down next to a man who was a federal inspector for the government. He was returning from his investigation of the crisis and shared the story with me. He told me that they traced the problem to the waste run-off from hog farms in the area. The toxic pig waste from the farms was running into Lake Erie and poisoning and killing the fish. If pigs blood is toxic, what about their poop! Yes, it can kill even highly diluted in Lake Erie.
       "Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Also known as factory farms, these industrial facilities cause substantial health problems, as well as environmental and economic harm to communities nationwide. The characteristics of a CAFO vary by what animal is being raised and region of the country.  But the defining characteristic of such farms is that hundreds to thousands of animals (mainly cows, pigs, chickens or turkeys) are confined tightly together and provided little or no access to sunlight, fresh air or room for natural movement.  A primary source of CAFO-related health and environmental problems is the vast quantities of manure they create. Livestock collectively generate 130 times more waste in the U.S. than humans. CAFOs' manure 'lagoons' often leak and foul water sources, which impairs water quality, human health, and quality of life in rural communities.
      "In one infamous case, in 1995 a North Carolina hog farm spilled 25 million gallons of manure into the New River -- more than twice the oil spilled by the Exxon Valdez -- killing 10 million fish and contaminating more than 350,000 acres of coastal shellfish habitat. This led North Carolina to impose a statewide moratorium on new factory farms in 1997. Manure spills are exceedingly common; tens of thousands have occurred in the last twenty years. Manure runoff can also lead to outbreaks of pathogens (such as Pfisteria in MD or E.Coli 0157:H7) and increased costs to communities for drinking water treatments. Feedlot runoff has also contributed to the Gulf of Mexico's 'Dead Zone,' a sealife-killing algae bloom the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined, as well as a similar catastrophe in Lake Erie.
      "Air emissions from manure lagoons, which can release ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in addition to 400 other volatile chemicals, have been linked to respiratory problems, seizures, brain damage, and death. There is extensive literature documenting acute and chronic respiratory diseases among factory farm workers as a result of the foul air in their workplace. Alarmingly, about one-fourth of CAFO swine workers have bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory problems. Growing evidence suggests that neighbors of CAFOs suffer severe consequences, including irreversible brain damage, from their emissions. To escape the stench and the health consequences, some have abandoned their homes." (www.citizen.org).
       "In the last several years, U.S. hog conglomerates have opened giant swine CAFOs south of the border, including dozens around Mexico City in the neighboring states of Mexico and Puebla. Smithfield Foods also reportedly operates a huge swine facility in the State of Veracruz. Many of these CAFOs raise tens of thousands of pigs at a time. Smithfield raises 950,000 hogs per year. Cheaper labor costs and a desire to enter the Latin American market are drawing more industrialized agriculture to Mexico all the time, wiping out smaller, traditional farms, which now account for only a small portion of swine production in Mexico. ... Vaccination of pigs against swine flu is prohibited in this area, and growers rely instead on depopulation and restriction of animal movement when outbreaks occur.
       "And of course, this vast amount of manure is highly concentrated geographically. For example, the bulk of pork consumed in the United States comes from a handful of counties in Iowa and North Carolina. In Mexico, the Perote region of Vera Cruz carries the burden of intensive hog production. The relatively few workers who staff these industrial farms, as well as the residents who live nearby, are vulnerable to the pathogens-and can carry them to far-flung populations. Workers involved in removing the wastes from animal houses, transporting wastes, and spreading wastes on land are especially at risk of exposure to pathogens through inhalation, dermal contact, and hand-to-mouth transfers.
       "Pigs are nature's notorious "mixing bowls" for inter-species infections, and many swine flu viruses have long contained human influenza genetic components. Then, in the late 1990's -- when industrialized swine production really took off in North America -- scientists were alarmed to find that avian influenza genetic material was also mixed into the continent's viral soup (see below). ... So where did this new, virulent and highly infectious influenza emerge from? According to Mexico's Health Minister, Jose Angel Cordova, the virus 'mutated from pigs, and then at some point was transmitted to humans.' It sure sounds like something happened on some farm, somewhere.
     "For years, leading scientists around the world have worried that large-scale, indoor swine "factories" would become breeding grounds for new pathogens that could more easily infect humans and then spread out rapidly in the general population - threatening to become a global pandemic. ... Many scientists also believe that people who work inside CAFOs are more at risk of contracting and spreading these and other 'zoonotic' diseases than those working in smaller-scale operations, with outdoor pens or pasture and far lower animal density.
      "But until now, hog workers with swine flu have rarely gone on to infect other people, save for close family members. And that is why this new strain of swine influenza virus is so vexing and alarming. It seems to spread quite easily through casual human contact. This new strain making headlines and killing people contains genetic components of human flu virus, avian flu virus and -- for the first time ever -- two types of swine flu virus: American and Eurasian. 'Such a combination of components (genes) was not found so far, neither among humans nor among pigs (as far as we know),' CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said in an email.
      "Nobody yet knows whether the mysterious mixing of two continents' swine flu genes is what made this outbreak so deadly, and so infectious among people, but you can bet that the world's best labs are already on the case. Another possibility is that a new and more aggressive strain of avian influenza got into the new mix as well.
      "The question, then, is could the Asian avian virus contain swine flu components from Eurasian pigs? ... 'Absolutely,' said Ellen Silbergeld, professor of environmental health sciences at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a leading researcher of pathogen evolution in CAFOs. 'A pig infected by avian virus can then come into contact with swine virus, which then combines and gets picked up by a bird again. It's a viral patchwork. Wild birds can carry virus with swine components in it -- a lot of avian viruses contain elements from pigs.' Silbergeld is by no means convinced that birds brought the Eurasian genetic material to Mexico.
      "'Pig's don't fly, but pork does,' she said. "There is an active international transfer of all kinds of animal products, including food, food components, animal waste, offal, feed made of rendered animals and so on. Some of it is imported from Asia or Europe.' And of course, people fly, too. Dr. Silbergeld thinks that human travel is the most likely way that Eurasian swine viral components made their way to Mexico. 'A tourist from China could have gone to Mexico City, and that Asian strain was picked up by somebody else, who then went to a swine barn,' she suggested. 'It's a likely explanation. Sometimes we overestimate what wild birds can do.' But no matter how the Eurasian strain got to Mexico, Dr. Silbergeld thinks the genetic swimming pool that is found in modern swine -- or poultry -- production is probably the place from whence this killer bug evolved.
     'CAFOs are not biosecure,' she said. 'They have high rates of ventilation and enormous number of animals that would die of heat stress unless the building was ventilated. We and others have measured bacteria and viruses in the environment around poultry and swine houses. They are carried by flies, too. These places are not bio-secure going in -- or going out.' 'These mixing bowls of intensive operations of chickens and pigs are contributing to speeding up viral evolution,' Dr. Silbergeld added. 'I think CAFOs are contributing.' Thus, it is not surprising that increased risks of pathogen exposure and infections, both bacterial and viral, have been reported among farmers, their families, and farm workers at poultry and swine operations."      As far as me and my house are concerned, we will heed the admonition of the Lord: "Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch [or breathe the air from their feces and urine]; they are
unclean to you." Leviticus 11:2, 7, 8.

 Christian Youth Health Conference Schedule
        
       We are less than a month away from the first annual Christian Youth Health Conference. We now have posters, postcards, and fliers for the event and are sending them out to those who request them. Next week, 5,000 people in California will be receiving a brochure in the mail, and you can view and print one at CYHC BROCHURES.
      I just spoke with Rob Johnson, the morning host at AM 840, KMPH -- The Patriot, and he offered to interview me on his radio show Monday, June 8, and Thursday, June 11, to talk about the free conference for Christian youth. Praise God for another opportunity. Rob Johnson was very impressed that everything is free -- free admission, free lectures, free camping, and free food.
       People are responding from other states and other countries and filling out registration forms at CYHC REGISTRATION. Tent campers, RVs, and volunteers are calling us regularly. I know God is going to bless CYHC and that it will be a great conference. The only disappointment is that only a handful of people have donated to this worthy cause for Christian youth. I know that the recession has hurt most of us, but some are making incredible sacrifices to help. Here is one email I received today:

    As I read this letter on the Heart-Shaped Potatoes a month late, I was impressed by Bonnie's faith and God's blessing on her.  I am going to mail you $10, which is not much, but you said every dollar can help for the CYHC. I think it's wonderful about the free conference!  
    I am not in the same situation as Bonnie, but I have debts and no money to pay them.  I have applied for work in Texarkana, where I live with my husband, daughter, son-in-law and grandson.  No one has called back to hire me.  I'm working on a garden, which is not doing very well since the ground is poor and we have been getting a lot of rain lately.  Also last night we had a tornado warning, but God kept it from coming to our place!
