While summer may be a time to relax and vacation, it is also the traditional season for changes to state and federal law.  This year is no different.
 
The Virginia General Assembly and Congress enacted new regulations impacting everything from food stamps, weights and measures to health insurance and recalled toys.  Failure to adhere to the modifications could be costly.

Barnes & Noble Scales Back New Store Plans

Barnes & Noble is cutting back on its expansion although it still plans to continue opening new stores this year. The retailer currently has plans for 15 new stores, and will continue to phase out its 51 B. Dalton stores.

Staples Seeks to Drive School-Supply Donations

Staples is teaming up with DoSomething.org to promote its school-supplies drive. The retailer is using social-media marketing to get teens to spend some time this summer gathering donations for needy children

Sources: 3 PR Shops to Represent Walmart

Interpublic Group's Golin Harris, WPP Group's Cohn & Wolfe and Omnicom Group's Porter Novelli reportedly have been added to Wal-Mart's PR roster after a review. The shops will vie for work from the discount giant in five segments: food/grocery and health/nutrition; apparel and home; hard lines, entertainment and seasonal events; financial services; and online. None of the parties commented for this article.

Kmart, Burger King Participate in "Transformers" Marketing Effort

Kmart is working closely with Burger King,

Mars and Hasbro on a promotional program tied to the June 24 release of Paramount Pictures' "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." Under the program, Burger King kids meals will include Kmart coupons for "Transformers" toys and footwear, and the quickservice chain will promote the discounter in a print and online newsletter. Hasbro will deploy in-store "boutiques" for "Transformers" toys, and Mars will supply candy and decorate store windows for events at two
Kmart stores in New York.

Eddie Bauer Files for Chapter 11 Protection



Eddie Bauer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and a private-equity firm plans to keep the majority of the retailer's 371 stores open if it successfully buys the company. "Eddie Bauer is a good company with a great brand and a bad balance sheet," CEO Neil Fiske said. "We know we can do it if given a fair chance and a better balance sheet.
